Heron in the fields: A friend of the farmer.
The presence of herons in the fields is a boon for farmers. When farmers plow their fields, insects, caterpillars, grasshoppers, and other harmful creatures hidden beneath the soil are brought to the surface. Herons voraciously eat these harmful insects. Herons act as natural pesticides. They reduce the population of crop-damaging insects, allowing farmers to reduce the use of expensive chemical pesticides.
By controlling the number of insects in the fields, herons protect crops from destruction. The presence of herons in a healthy field indicates a balanced ecosystem and the absence of excessive chemical use. The white color of herons is considered a symbol of purity and simplicity. They are considered auspicious in villages. However, the excessive use of chemicals and pesticides in agriculture is negatively impacting the numbers of these birds. Eating pesticide-treated insects negatively impacts the health of herons.
