Holy Thursday: A Commemoration of Love and Service
Holy Thursday, also known as Maundy Thursday, stands as a profound day in the Christian calendar, marking the beginning of the Easter Triduum. It serves as a sacred commemoration of the Last Supper, the final meal Jesus Christ shared with his apostles in Jerusalem before his arrest and subsequent crucifixion. This day is rich with theological significance, centering on three primary pillars: the institution of the Holy Eucharist, the establishment of the priesthood, and Jesus’ commandment of love.
During this final Passover meal, Jesus transformed the traditional elements of bread and wine, instituting the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. By breaking the bread and sharing the cup, he declared them to be his body and blood, offered for the forgiveness of sins and the salvation of humanity. In doing so, he commanded his disciples to "do this in memory of me," establishing a ritual that remains the heart of Christian worship today.
Alongside this, Holy Thursday commemorates the establishment of the priesthood. In a powerful display of humility and service, Jesus washed the feet of his disciples, modeling the behavior he expected of those who would lead his Church. This act is the origin of the term "Maundy," derived from the Latin mandatum, meaning "command." Jesus gave his disciples a "new commandment": to love one another just as he had loved them. This act of foot washing continues to be reenacted in many church services as a reminder of the mandate to serve others with humility.
The observance of Holy Thursday often concludes with a sense of solemnity. Following the Mass of the Lord’s Supper, the Blessed Sacrament is frequently processed to a temporary altar of repose, where the faithful are invited to spend time in quiet prayer and adoration, accompanying Jesus in his vigil in the Garden of Gethsemane. This day, therefore, acts as a bridge—moving from the intimate fellowship of the Last Supper toward the impending sacrifice of Good Friday.
