Nigeria’s Escalating Insecurity: A Deepening National Crisis
Nigeria continues to grapple with a multidimensional insecurity crisis that has intensified across the country in recent years. In the Northeast, Boko Haram and its splinter faction, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), have renewed attacks, targeting civilians, military bases, and critical infrastructure. This resurgence of extremist violence marks a dangerous escalation, with experts noting that insurgent groups are adapting their tactics and expanding their operational reach beyond traditional strongholds.
According to the UN, the conflict has displaced over two million people in the region, destroyed schools and health facilities, and severely disrupted economic life, leaving an entire generation growing up in camps with little access to normalcy.
In the Northwest and North-Central zones, armed bandit groups continue to carry out mass kidnappings, village raids, and extortion. Between July 2024 and June 2025, over 2,900 people were kidnapped in the Northwest alone, with Zamfara, Kaduna, and Katsina among the hardest-hit states. These groups have expanded their territorial control, pushing deeper into rural communities and forcing thousands to abandon their homes.
Intercommunal violence between herders and farmers, driven by resource competition, has also escalated, resulting in large-scale killings and displacement in Plateau, Benue, and other central states.
The South is not exempt from turmoil. Separatist movements in the Southeast, cult-related violence in the South-South, and criminal gang activities in the Southwest have further contributed to a nationwide climate of fear and instability. Recent analyses highlight that Nigeria’s security agencies often operate reactively and lack coordination, creating gaps that armed groups readily exploit.
The cumulative effect of insurgency, banditry, intercommunal conflict, and organized crime has produced one of Africa’s most severe humanitarian crises. With millions displaced, education disrupted, and livelihoods destroyed, insecurity remains a central challenge that demands urgent, cohesive, and long-term solutions.
