Conflict of Experience Vs Expertise

Today has been a stressful day at work. Since the past few weeks this issue has been going on. There has been a new person who has joined as a Procurement Head in our office, of course he has good expertise in his job, but there has been problem with his behaviour, which is creating a very unpleasant atmosphere in the office. Ours is a very small company and there are not many people to deal with. Even a small matter becomes big in such environment.

Here the clash is between this one new person expertise vs the experience of all those who are part of the office since years. He feels that his expertise does not require opinion of the experience and hence he operates in his own individual manner. The other finds this very arrogant and hence there is a conflict between one this person and the others. Today I planned to do a team meeting with everyone, bringing everyone in one room and sorting out their differences.

I also personally find problem with his behaviour, so when others are complaining I know that it is true, and it's not a situation of one against all. This person just does not want to listen to anyone; there is lot of arrogance. He comes from a big Company so he has the feeling that he knows it all, but the issue is that this is a different Country. Laws are regulations are different here. Work systems are different here, and if he does not work cordially with everyone, he creates unrest with everyone. While the new person is arrogantly rude, I have also observed that the others around have become very defensive, so no one wants to hear out each other, they feel that their experience in the Company is being discounted by this person. Which to an extent is right.

In short, we had 2 hours of heated discussions and then I had to put up some clear guidelines for everyone to work hand in hand with one another. Next month I will be doing again a review of the progress between the teams and I am hoping that today's meeting will bring a change in the behaviour.
