Crowd-incubation for growth in the Steem ecosystem: Developer Delegation Day #5

in #crowd-support4 days ago (edited)

It's January 5th (GMT), so it's time for our 5th Developer Delegation Day.

Developer delegation day is a concept that I introduced back in August, and have participated in on the 5th of September, October, November, December, and now January.

The idea is simple. Delegate 5 SP to a developer of your choice on the 5th of each month. The date and the amount were chosen to be affordable and easily remembered.

Many web sites offer a capability to support your favorite creators with a recurring monthly subscription. Steem is one of the few places where we also have an option to support people with delegations. So, what was proposed in August was a way to harness that unique capability in order to help incubate development in the Steem ecosystem. In the original article, it was described like this:

On the 5th of each month, community members will delegate 5 STEEM Power (SP) to a Steem developer of their choice. This regular support helps sustain and incentivize the developers who will become the backbone of the Steem ecosystem.

In addition to being affordable and easily remembered, other benefits of the delegation vs. monthly subscriptions are that delegations continue generating interest for the owner and they can be withdrawn at any time.

Here's my list of delegations from last month.

And this month I'm adding @rexthetech, who created an excellent series of posts for setting up a Steem witness node; wrote the Press4Steem module; wrote and open sourced a multisig tool; and recently contributed to SteemAtlas.

From SteemWorld, here are this month's delegation transactions.

After those delegations, here's the updated table:

In Steem's early days, people used to describe the ecosystem as a gift economy. I think this was because one of the best ways to succeed here (long term) is to help others succeed. With some of the changes over the years, the gift aspect of the economy has been deemphasized, but maybe we can work together with initiatives like this in order to bring it back again.

One of the known intangible benefits of the attention economy, where Steem is a player, is "patronage" or "paying simply because it feels good". This is how many open source software projects get funded. In addition to accelerating ecosystem improvement, these delegations also offer a totally new method for people to feel good about making a contribution.

Plus, participation in the initiative makes a great monthly topic for a genuine, organic blog post😉.

Before I close, I'd also like to gratefully acknowledge #ddd delegations that have been sent my way. Thank you to @antorv, @hardphotographer, @moecki, @o1eh, and @steemchiller!

Thank you for your time and attention.

As a general rule, I up-vote comments that demonstrate "proof of reading".
