[NEW PROJECT] The Illuminated Atlas of the Steem-Powered World

in #steem-atlas3 days ago (edited)

Today we are launching The Illuminated Atlas of the Steem-Powered World.

This is a new map based project from the @pennsif.witness team.

Steem has many thousands of great posts about many thousands of great places around the world.

The Steem-Atlas project provides an easy interface to explore those posts.

The Illuminated Atlas of the Steem-Powered World

The Illuminated Atlas of the Steem-Powered World takes its inspiration from the old Steemit Worldmap, originally by @martibis, that ran successfully on Steem for several years before the 'big split'.

The @pennsif.witness team (@pennsif, @rexthetech, @freelance.monkey) have built this Steem Atlas with new technology and a new mapping system.

Mobile Friendly

Particular effort has been made to ensure that Steem Atlas works as well on smart phones as it does on laptops and PCs.

Ready to try...

For the initial populating of the Steem Atlas we have pulled in over 44,000 posts that were geo-located through Steemit Worldmap.

Now we would like to see new posts being added.

The Steem Atlas project is live in open beta and ready for use...

If you are writing a post about a museum, a place of worship, a restaurant, a zoo, a shopping mall, a restaurant, a park, or any where you have visited - then why not try adding it to the Steem Atlas.

You can either add your post through the Steem Atlas using markdown, or you can create the post in your usual interface (such as steemit.com) and just grab the map code from Steem Atlas to include in your post.

For either, start by clicking on the Add Pin icon at the bottom of the map...

Then zoom into the map to find the exact location of the place you are posting about.

Click on that location and a Add a Post box will pop up.

You can make your post there in markdown, and drag and drop in your images.

Or you can scroll down to the bottom of that posting box to use the Copy Code button to grab the location code to copy & paste into your post made in another interface.

If you make a post for Steem Atlas include #steem-atlas as one of the first four tags so we can look out for your post. We will be voting on the best ones 😃

PLEASE NOTE : If you post through Steem Atlas your posting key is not retained or collected by our site in anyway. It remains purely client-side in your browser.

Previous Posts

You can also use this 'Copy Code' option to add a Steem Atlas location code to your older posts.

We will be happy to see people adding good quality, relevant posts that they have made in the past.

The Road Ahead

The site is still in its beta stage and there are bound to be some bugs and oddities that will surface as the site gets used.

Please comment below with any issues you have with the site. Or contact @pennsif on Discord.

After this initial beta stage we are planning a full launch of the site early in December.

Then we will be looking to promote the site far and wide beyond Steem.

We very much see the Steem Atlas as an outward looking project.

It has great potential to attract people to join Steem.

People cannot resist a zoomable map with pins - they will always zoom in to explore places they know 😀

A Pennsif.Witness Project

The Steem Atlas has been developed by the @pennsif.witness team of @pennsif, @rexthetech and @freelance.monkey.

The team has many plans to develop and expand the Steem Atlas.

Much will depend on the feedback from users, the amount of usage, and the resources we have available.

If you would like to support the project, please consider voting for @pennsif.witness.

We believe Steem Atlas has great potential to promote Steem to the wider world and attract new people to the platform.

Please help it live long and prosper...

Thank you.

Interesting idea. The map (on your screenshots) has a touch of the earlier Anno games. I like it :-)
I took a look and saw this:

The map parts are little mixed up... it happens on Firefox and Edge.
It's beta :-D

Hi @moecki

Thanks for taking a look at Steem Atlas. Glad you like the look and feel.

I cannot replicate the broken map tile issue. It might be a loading issue.

It is only on the test server at the moment.

Try a forced refresh and see if the issue is fixed.

I refreshed the site several times... with the same result.
And the same on mobile. Strange... Is the map okay for you?

Could it be due to the calculation of the translate3d coordinates?

Thanks for the further feedback - we are investigating.

Hi @moecki

We have been making some changes and improvements to the site. It is now at https://steematlas.com/.

Are you still getting the same problem with the map?

Is it possible to add historical posts to the map? I'd like to add these:

I tried pinning the one from Cherry Springs to the map, but it doesn't seem like I did it right.

Edited to add: I think I get it now. I copied the code and added it to Photography: Car and Stars, but I don't see it on the map yet. How long does it take to refresh?

Hi @remlaps

We have now done some more fixes on the site, and your Car and Stars post is now visible on the map.

The site is now at https://steematlas.com/

Thank you! I see it there now. I look forward to seeing how the site evolves!

Thanks @remlap for testing this.

We are investigating why it isn't appearing yet.

I couldn’t find the “add pin” from my iPad…

At least you can see the map as a whole. Looks good!

Thanks for this @offgridlife.

We are fixing it for iPads just now.

Hi @offgridlife,

The iPad issue should now be fixed.

The site is now at https://steematlas.com/

Does it work okay for you now on the iPad?

Excellent. Thank you for trying the site.

I copied the code to one of my older post but the pin doesn't show in the map. What could be the reason?

Also, wouldn't a 'search location' option more feasible, instead of manual navigation?

It's a cool project specially for travel bloggers.

Which was the post you put the code into?

Adding a Search is on the list of future feature additions as resources permit.

Adding a Search is on the list of future feature additions as resources permit.

That would be a useful addition.

Thanks for this - we will investigate.

Please would you paste here the map code you used for this so we can test fully.

Hi @event-horizon

We have made some changes to the site.

The site is now at https://steematlas.com/

Please would you check if your site is now appearing on the map.

it's a beautiful idea, especially like me who likes to always share new places that I discover and it's a way to make others know about it too, in fact I used it on Hive before they kicked me out

We have now moved it to its own domain...

https://steematlas.com/

I hope members of the Traveling Steem community use it.

Yes I will make a post about it for the community anyway thanks for your work

That will be great, thank you.

The most important thing is that I found my village and city here. 😅

1000306851.jpg

That is great.

I look forward to seeing posts on Steem Atlas about your village 😃

I will do it soon. 👍

Cool project! I also really like the look, really great. And it's amazing where Steemians hang out, even in the Antarctic.

If it is interesting for you, after a loading time of 30 seconds (50 kbit/s line) the page ran smoothly.

image.png

Glad you like the project @michelangelo3.

And thanks for the feedback about the load time.

We have now moved the site to https://steematlas.com/ and started working on performance optimisation.

Still some more to do on that but I would be interested to see if your load time has improved now.

Congratulation, the page loads much faster now:

(Sorted by time)

By the way, I was wrong, I have 50 Mbit/s here and not 50 kbit as I wrote above.

Good to hear it is loading faster. Still a few more possible tweaks.

Thank you for the data.

Awesome. I will add some reviews from Canada 🇨🇦

Very good idea sir, with the Steem-Atlas Project we can experience a new map display so that many members use Steem-Atlas, in the next few weeks this project will run smoothly and successfully.

Glad you like the idea.

Give it a try !

Kabar gembira, saya tidak sabar untuk mencoba hal baru ini, pasti sangat seru. Penuh penasaran dengan maps di https://map.pennsif.net/. Semoga berjalan dengan lancar project baru ini. Terimakasih pak @pennsif...

@walictd

I look forward to seeing your first post on Steem Atlas.

The site is now at https://steematlas.com/

Ok, within weeks I'll try it as soon as possible. Success is always sir
