When Expertise Changes Direction
Daybook March 22
Nurse educators sometimes feel guilty about leaving bedside care, but their expertise has simply shifted. Education is another powerful form of nursing.
Some nurse educators quietly carry a sense of guilt.
They think that because they are no longer managing a full patient load, they are somehow less of a nurse.
But education is not a departure from nursing.
It is an extension of it.
A bedside nurse cares for patients directly.
A nurse educator prepares the nurses who will care for many patients.
The influence becomes broader.
Expertise does not disappear.
It simply changes direction.
One Line for Nurses and Learners:
Expertise does not disappear—it evolves.
