Why I Choose to Educate Nurses, Even on the Hard Days
Daybook December 28
Even on the most stressful days, nurse educators often return to a deeper reason for their work.
Clinical education is a form of indirect care—ensuring that only the best nurses care for the people we love.
After a particularly hard day,
a nurse educator was asked a simple question by her young daughter:
“Mom, do you like your job?”
She paused—not wanting one bad day to decide the answer.
And she replied honestly, “Yes, I do.”
When her daughter asked why,
she explained that someday her family—or anyone else’s—might need surgery.
And she wanted to make sure that only the best nurses would be there to care for them.
That is what education is.
Even when educators are not at the bedside,
they are caring—quietly, indirectly, and deeply—
by preparing nurses who will protect patients and families.
One Line for Nurses & Student Nurses Today:
Education is caring for patients you may never meet.
