Killing ‘em for 31 years...

in #discord6 years ago (edited)

When my daughter was 12 years old she was paddling around in the swimming pool and for some reason a hornet decided to sting her. She was crying, screaming really, and in great pain. We put whetted baking soda on the sting location which significantly reduced her suffering.

Up until that moment I was a live and let live kinda guy, but that day I declared war on all stinging creatures that thought to make a home in, on, or around anything I own. Fast forward to today, 31 years later, and I'm still killing hornets with a vengeance. About a dozen today. I'm still using the same spray can I purchased over 3 decades ago. Obviously, excellent quality. I've included an image. The ammunition is camp stove fuel also known as white gas. Kills 'em dead without leaving a residue like other petroleum distillates. I fill the spray can half full with camp stove fuel and use my air compressor to charge it to 100 PSI.

After my daughter was stung that summer before winter I recorded killing over 375 hornets and destroying two or three nests under the deck I built around the swimming pool. In the 31 years I’ve killed thousands of them. I especially find the challenging mid-air downings to be very satisfying.

Now it’s my grandchildren that might get stung, but not on my watch! Grandpa is armed and dangerous!

Im not actually into insects that sting either. There is mud daubers here, which are a type of wasp, as those yellow jacket f*cks are. And they do sting without reason.

Michigan has several varieties of stinging insects that I like to kill. Honey bees are not one of them. I even slow down my mower to give them a chance to escape so they don't go through the blades. We are too far north to have killer bees at least that is what they say today.

Seems like about once a year I end up mowing over a hole in the ground with yellow jackets nested in it. One year I had about 3 of them fly up into my shorts and start stinging away....ouch. Ran into the house and threw off the shorts and started smacking them against the floor to kill the wretched things.

"Ouch" is right! I had them in a hole a few years ago and I made sure my canister was fully charged and just gave them an almost steady stream of camp stove gas. Killed the grass around the hole, but they were gone. It was right next to a dwarf golden delicious apple tree. I was worried I'd lose the tree, but it's still there and the grass grew back as well. Still I get stung a couple times a year and usually while I'm doing something other than trying to kill them.
