Seems like about once a year I end up mowing over a hole in the ground with yellow jackets nested in it. One year I had about 3 of them fly up into my shorts and start stinging away....ouch. Ran into the house and threw off the shorts and started smacking them against the floor to kill the wretched things.
"Ouch" is right! I had them in a hole a few years ago and I made sure my canister was fully charged and just gave them an almost steady stream of camp stove gas. Killed the grass around the hole, but they were gone. It was right next to a dwarf golden delicious apple tree. I was worried I'd lose the tree, but it's still there and the grass grew back as well. Still I get stung a couple times a year and usually while I'm doing something other than trying to kill them.
