The Empathy Myth: (Excerpts from the Audio-Cast)
Popular culture seized this ambiguity and ran. The 1968 Star Trek episode "The Empath" offers a revealing snapshot of empathy entering the cultural bloodstream . The plot: aliens test Kirk, Spock, and McCoy by torturing them while observing a mute woman named Gem, who possesses the ability to absorb others' pain into herself.

Fan reviews of the episode are instructive. One writes: "It introduced to me as a young lad, the notion of empathy, and took it to a level which has at times been debated as possible or not, physical empathy. To be able to take the pain and suffering from someone and transfer it onto oneself" . Another celebrates "the ability to perceive the feelings of others, and to incorporate these so completely into your own emotional and mental state that you must act" .

Stephen King's The Green Mile (both novel and film) presents John Coffey, a death row inmate with miraculous healing powers. The story explicitly frames him as a Christ figure, his initials are J.C., he heals the sick, and he dies to spare others suffering . But his power is specifically described as empathic: "His powers are empathic based and in order to heal someone he has to take their pain and put it inside him. Not only that but he empathically feels the pain of everyone he is near" .

This is Star Trek's Gem updated for the 1990s: the suffering servant whose empathy literally wounds him. The message is unmistakable, true empathy hurts. If you're not bleeding inside for others, you're not really doing it right.

Empathy functions today as social currency, a way of demonstrating moral sophistication without committing to anything costly. The café psychologist who announces, "I'm just a highly sensitive person, I feel everything," is not asking for help; they're claiming status. The podcaster who laments society's empathy deficit is implicitly positioning themselves among the empathetic elite.
