Is it Ethical to Have Children?

in #ethics7 years ago

Assuming that one claims to have an ethical basis for their actions, bringing a child in this world might be a bit tricky. Our species is close to 8 billion with most not having food, water and shelter on a daily basis. Furthemore, a child does not ask to be brought into an existence of suffering — assuming we are taking the gross average into consideration. Couple this with our carbon footprint and you can understand how things can go to shit.

We have control over our own bodies and we can create a child if we so wish. Thing is, that child belongs to their biological father or society(?) Where does one draw the line and why? If one assumes that their child is their own then we might as well assume dominion over that individual — even to the point of enslavement. The child is a by-product of our own biology after all.

If we start taking the socio-cultural narrative and the ethos of religion or state law then our rights and obligations towards that form of life change dramatically. In some eras, the child was a product of the state — still is in someway. The general ethos of the group can determine whether or not a parent is fit to take care their own child.

Based on the current state of the world I believe that there is no point in bringing another life into existence other than the superficial satisfaction of experiencing our genes getting passed on. In other words, it is much like patriotism but on a more concentrated level. One can be proud about the random group of cells as one one can be proud about their home grown tomatoes — which, even if they suck — they are still special.

In other words the whole process is sentimental. Couple this with the fact that life is indeed mostly suffering, disease and survival — by stepping onto others so we can shine and you can understand where this is going in respect to ethics. Such is the stat of existence — from the time we take exams to the interview to find a job. There is filtering in regards to what life matters most and which one shall suffer the most even if the circumstances in regards to which one prevails or fails are entirely arbitrary. After all, we need to find meaning in the meaningless noise.

If humanity could live forever the conversation would be entirely different. We wouldn't have the biological need to pass on our genes because for the most part we could grow parts of ourselves and prolong our existence. What motivates us and what shapes the ethos of life and death are all based on we perceive our physiology and the place it has for the overall preservation of our species.

In order for our species to carry on there needs to be procreation of smart and productive people. While birth rates among the best of us has somewhat flatlined; those that don't know any better are having children at an explosive rate. Thanks in the most part to the welfare state, which encourages those that cannot provide for themselves, an incentive, or so they think, to have more children that the state (taxpayers) will pay for.

In other words @Kyriacos, start fucking or we'll be overrun w/morons!! Don't be such a nihilist. ;). Good philosophical post tho!!

The Earth is not anywhere near overpopulated. We produce far more food than we need. The suffering and such is created by humanity's greed. We throw away food rather than give it to the poor. Besides, if we just gave food to those that are starving to death, that would make us communists!

Likewise, the horrible state that the Earth is in is due to the actions of people, not their number. We could easily support more than double our population if we lived in a smarter manner.

Work on teaching people to live in a more sustainable manner, rather than convincing them they should end their hereditary line for the good of humanity.

True words.

kyriacos ? Are you a kind of satanic abortionist? I'm following you for long time, but maybe i missed something?
It comes to my mind that may be your genes are not worth to exist?
Or maybe you don know that all humans could live in Australia and there would be place enough for growing food in a garden in each house?
Flagged

Hey @jib. I don't understand the vitriol here. We may have interpreted this post very differently. I'm curious about what you saw in the message.

Disagreeing is not a reason to flag.

It is also a highly unwise and brash choice to do what could be considered equivalent to throwing a stone at the Great Wall of China... ;cP

Fun with flags?sure check your page religiotard

Let me get this straight...

By your reasoning every person who muses over whether it is or is not ethical to procreate is... both an abortionist 'and' a satanist at that?

If that is so then here is another article that you might wish to hazzard flagging.

A word of advice however. Flags do not work the way that you think that they do (and it definitely hurts to meet a user of higher reputation who decides to flag you back in retaliation.

Furthermore, presuming a present population of 7.5 Billion people - we have presently gotten to the point that, on average, within ever square kilometer of the Earth's land surface.

The surface area of our planet amounts to some 510 million square kilometers. Roughly 70% of that is water. Leaving some 155 million square kilometers of land. This is what the figure is based upon.

Could a square kilometer sustain 48 people? Perhaps... it presently needs to... but is it really representative of anything more than folly to wish to contribute to this problem?

Think about it. Flags are meant to signal significant misdemeanors. they are not intended as weapons (though some do choose to do so).

I mean it should avoid hardly,It is not ethical for children it suffering this child. So writing against it is awesome and i have liked such a writing as like movement .Tha ks for your blog

According to my definition: 100% yes

great post my best friend

Today I read about the experiment "Universe 25". The experiment was carried out in 1968 in mice. The result made me think. Your message has again returned to me my thoughts on this. I have a link to a video about this experiment in my blog.

The forces of nature do not care what we think and plan. And the guys from one of your previous post neither.
But you bring out some good points.

Interesting read @kyriacos. This topic is fringe thinking. I happen to be on that fringe with you. I've suffered in life and didn't get a chance to "opt out" so the following resonated with me. .

Based on the current state of the world I believe that there is no point in bringing another life into existence other than the superficial satisfaction of experiencing our genes getting passed on. In other words, it is much like patriotism but on a more concentrated level

Your first paragraph too caught me in agreement.

Plenty of people are parents who shouldn't be. You need a license to drive a car but deciding to raise or discard a life seems to be superficial in nature.

Nice read, thanks.

When we will be 20 Billion it might be unethical to create a child...

However, I am not planning to have children but I am only 21 maybe I ll change my mind later..
