State of Exhaustion

November 23, 2018

Happy Friday to all Steemians and Exhaustions....Exhaustans...Exhaustonauts?... Exhaustonauts it is.

I hope you've all had as enjoyable of a week as was possible, given your personal conditions. Whether you're old, young, broke, well-to-do, a student, a professional, a parent or a child -- there are things that make each of our world go round. I've heard that it's currently (or approaching) American Thanksgiving -- so there's some people taking a moment this week to figure out what they're thankful for.

I, for one, would like to thank all the great people using and helping find all the bugs and breaks in @exhaust!

During times like these where we're seeing red everywhere, and people are losing much of the value they thought they had accumulated, it's important to take stock of the tangible things in our lives that truly enrich us. I wont speak much to the loss in value of Bitcoin, Steem or other alts -- but what I will recommend is taking a moment to spend some time with your loved ones. Be good to them, and be good to yourself, too! Without our body, mind, and "soul" (whatever your interpretation may be) -- there's no real reason to play this game anyways.

Go Outside and Play

Updates!

It's raining pretty consistently over here in Victoria BC -- which is a bit of a bummer in terms of my running, training, and general outside time. However, that means it's much easier for me to sit inside, crack a beer, get fat and plug away at some much needed updates on @exhaust! The last couple of days have seen:

  • All voting buttons (I think...) now launch the vote-slider popup so you can choose a custom weight. No more auto 100% votes on comments!;
  • A couple bugs related to short-distance GPS-tracked files have been squashed!;
  • The footer on the page FINALLY has stuff in it!!!! I know you've all been waiting for it!;
  • And something that people might ACTUALLY care about, is that I've almost got mapping working! This has been a bit trickier than I anticipated, but in a couple weeks, we should be able to start adding a run by clicking out a route on a map (if you don't have a GPS tracker), seeing where your friends have run, and further down the road, compare your performance on different days for your favorite running/cycling/hiking routes! I intend to (hopefully) also couple this with Fitbit / Step tracking data, so if you describe where you went (again, if you don't have GPS), you can still get some (slightly less accurate) cadence, pace, and HR data (depending on your device).

Short and Sweet for Now!

I don't want to ramble on too much today, so I'll end things here. Just know that while it may not be the best time for your Steem wallet, it's always the best time to get outside and spend some energy on investing in yourself.

Stay Healthy, Happy, and Exhausted!

Hello and congrats. Yes, rain can be a good excuse for almost everything :)

Good work overall, excellent. Both for you on the app and for us getting some kilometers done.

A question - did you consider plugging in directly to some more popular web services like Strava? For example, the user enters Strava link or just the id of the exercise, which has to be publicly visible or granted to your app, then your plugin automagically fetches the data from Strava and ... voila :)

One other thing which is doable in some far, far future as a possible bonus. Connecting location data of uploaded images to the map as a link. Imagine thumbnails overlay on the map. You click on it and an image pops up.

Or, a map on a dashboard with your recent runs. Click on it and you get the report.

Or, a cumulative map of all users' events during the last day. This would make a very interesting world map. Good promo material too ;)

Ps: this was my first upvote and reply through the xhaust.me web page.

Glad to see you're using the voting and commenting in the site. Commenting especially, as it helps make us of @exhaust's VP and helps earn the project some curation rewards for voting on users comments!

I have thought about plugging directly into some other apps like Strava. I was reading the ToS for Strava's API, and it sounded pretty serious about not being willing to allow access to app that could be seen as "competitors". Given that this is essentially as "social media exercise tracking" project -- I didn't want to invest much time into that.

I've actually had this in mind for a while now. I'm getting pretty close to having mapping stable and working on my test-versions of the site. I think it would be awesome to show images on a map with your tracked run (especially for hiking activities, which I think I'm hoping to give some kind of bonus for photos taken at the summit). I like the idea of it for the dashboard summary too -- very cool idea. I definitely need to spend some time overhauling the dashboard and some other stuff shortly here.

Thanks for the great suggestions!

Things are going really well and I think you should be commended on your work. It is pretty clear we are seeing more users(Who were using other products) coming over to Exhaust, so your clearly doing something right. I just need to get some more cyclists over now as well.
Regards Vince

Thanks! That means a lot, actually. I'm pretty critical of myself, and often focus on the hiccups and bumps a bit more than I likely should.

I think I've mentioned that I've almost got mapping systems (more of a GIS database, to be accurate -- which is a pretty powerful analysis tool once it gets up and running) which could / should allow for some interesting features (finding running routes nearby, finding runners nearby to potentially form a group?, "checking in" the gyms, flagging cool landmarks to check out, flagging cool picture opportunities, creating running routes that other users could select, etc...).

I just need to reign myself in a little bit and stop jumping around back and forth between things (though, it's also nice having a few "sub-tasks" on to go at once, so I don't get too bored / frustrated with anything).

I really really really want to have a few things tossed together to a point where they're presentable to local businesses around here and see if I can't get some running / cycling stores investing a bit to reward their running / cycling group members. There's some stuff hinging on being able to have a "light store" where you can redeem STEEM / SBD for waterbottles and stuff like that... The new DSTORS stuff is compelling, if it's ready in time, but I think I can slap together some "storefront" infrastructure without too much trouble.

(Too long didn't read?):

Thanks for hanging around for this long. Excited to have you on board. Interesting things coming up for Exhaust (hopefully) in 2019 -- and I hope you keep up your gargantuan efforts!
