Frozen Tequeños #2 - 18 February 2026

I just wanted to report on my experience ‘making’ tequeños from this frozen pack. I first wrote about this frozen version last year in this post.

I started by heating some oil on the woodstove as the induction hob tends to ‘burn things rather quickly’. Using the stove is safer as both the pan and oil heat up slowly - which is also a negative feature if you are hungry and want to eat something quickly.

The tequeños were stuck together, but I didn’t dare try to break them apart in case they broke off so I just put them on the hot oil for about 5 minutes .

When I managed to separate them I began to move them around on the oil to try to get them to brown on nicely and cook evenly.

The cooking process was very slow; I started to get a bit concerned when the oil began to look a bit burnt. As an aside I used olive oil which is not supposed to be great for frying but that’s what I had available at the time.

When I began to see that the tequeños looked brown and some of the cheese was seeping out I thought they must be ready.

I finished the frying process after about 12 minutes which was much longer than what was suggested on the box. I reckon that’s because I didn’t deep fat fry them.

When finished I put them on a sheet of kitchen towel to soak the excess oil and offered one to my friends - we had two each in the end.

We discussed how we could make them ourselves as we don’t have that sort of cheese (that I know of at the local Co-op supermarket). My friend suggested halloumi but I reckon that would be a bit too hard and it’s better fried by itself.

We are still considering that as we liked the idea of ‘finger food’.

Thanks for reading !

That's great, I imagine you didn't want too much fat, and I understand, but tequeños puff up more when fried in plenty of hot oil. I can't wait to see those homemade tequeños. Like you, I enjoy foods from other countries, and cooking them at home is quite an experience.

Take care, blessings.

Thanks for the comment @marito74, yes, partly that but also I knew that olive oil is not great for frying so I didn't put much.

Today we just had some of my friend's fried halloumi - nice and salty ! :D

How wonderful, long live friendships and those precious moments 😃
