Want to go vegan but love pizza? I've got your back. (Steemit Culinary Challenge)
Pizza - one of the most universally loved foods ever. Odds are, you're a pizza fan. But can you be vegan and still have pizza nights?
Don't worry, you can. It just takes a little know-how. Here's how to knock up an easy peasy pizza in your own kitchen. If it goes well, it should turn out looking a little something like this...
Yum, right? Okay, let's get started.
First you'll need a pizza base. You can of course make your own, but often when I want pizza I'm also feeling lazy, so most often I go for these:
These pizza bases from Napolina aren't a bad price, aren't a bad size, not too thin and not too thick. Perfect.
Next slap on a bit of tomato purée. Own brands are fine for this, but if you want to save yourself a bit of time you can get the stuff with herbs and garlic already mixed in. If you get the plain stuff, mince some garlic and sprinkle it evenly over your tomatoed pizza base.
Next, add your veg of choice. Mushrooms, onion, sweetcorn, sweet peppers, pineapple - the choice is yours. Now for the good stuff...
It is only a slight exaggeration to say that this cheese has changed my life. I am generally VERY fussy when it comes to vegan cheese (most taste like feet), but this I actually love. It's mild and melty and really does the pizza cheese thing.
After you've done this, just stick it in the oven for 20 minutes or until it looks done 🍕🍕🍕
I also recommend the pizza variation where instead of a pizza base, you use puff pastry. Hint: the Jus Rol brand is vegan! This too is delicious and good for dinner parties (or cut into little slices for a buffet).
Okay, but what if you really want pizza, but you just can't be bothered to make it? Is there a pizza express for vegans?
Yes!
But it's Zizzi's. Zizzi's have a whole vegan menu and one of the best items on it is the pizza. It had a sparkling reputation and for such good reason. Definitely give it go.
Have you got any vegan pizza tips? Leave them in the comments below!
If you're reallllly stuck and don't have a good vegan option near you like Zizzi's, the chain pizza like Domino's and Pizza Hut can be vegan if you leave off the cheese. (You just need to check, it's only specific doughs and sauces that will be vegan.)
And then you can add vegan cheese and mock meats and throw it in the oven at home.
You should look for a coupon code tho, Pizza Hut usually has a $5.99 three topping medium pizza code floating around. Otherwise I wouldn't pay like $14 for a pizza that doesn't even have cheese on it yet hehe.
Your pizza looks delicious and I want it :)
Really?? Great tips, the dominos one never used to be vegan and I never bothered checking again!
Also thanks for the heads up on the Pizza Hut code, always good to save money 😄
Hehe ya, this is the Pizza Hut code actually: TEOMED3T6
Worked last time I tried, just order online and enter it in.
And ya, I think it's only the thin crust from Domino's that's vegan.
I love pizza! Most of them actually don't need any cheese. My fav is buckwheat pizza crust. I'm sure you can find these pre-made too. Living in rural Cambodia however, doesn't come with convenient foods hehe!
Yeah for sure! (Although the cheese does add an extra something 😉) serious respect for you living without convenience foods, I don't think I could do it 24/7!
A small price we pay to live in paradise hehe! And making your own pizza dough actually only takes 5 minutes. Though we have some convenient foods such as canned beans/lentils/chickpeas, yogurt or pre-cut pineapples (that's about how far convenient foods go), there is no such thing as frozen pizza, tv dinners, pizza or pie crusts, etc.... fresh whole foods! If you want convience then it is eating out, which is very cheap here luckily ;) Have a great day!
Looks tasty, nice!
Good helpful tips for vegans who like pizza... especially vegans who aren't keen on cooking or don't have much time. Looks tasty, good luck @harrietbradley!
A good pizza is always nice! That's the first corn I've seen on a pizza - it looks good! And good luck in the Culinary Challenge!
yummmm vegan pizza!
