A Skunk's New World - Freewrite Day 488 Entry - Prompt: BabysteemCreated with Sketch.

in #freewrite7 years ago

Hello friends. I hope that you're doing well :)

This is my response to the Freewrite prompt, a daily writing exercise that I am really enjoying doing. Thank you @mariannewest for hosting these, and thank you to the people who have delegated SP to me to be able to continue utilizing the Steem platform. I'm very grateful for all the support.

I’ve been challenging myself to make all of the freewrites I do match a particular theme. So far, I have made them about wild animals that tend to get a bad reputation, and am finding it to be a very enjoyable challenge. I’d be curious if anyone else had any other suggestions.

Prompt: “Baby”

She woke up next to her two brothers and one sister. With her eyes still closed, she was scared, but could smell her mother nearby. Oh, boy could she smell her. Being skunks, all of her family had a particularly pungent odor, but she felt safe snuggling amongst her siblings.

Her mother noticed she had woken up, and came over to lick her head a few times. As she squeaked in pleasure, her mother laid down and pulled all of her babies in close. For the next few weeks, she would stay by her mother’s side constantly, as she grew and explored this new and exciting world she found herself in. So far she just knew the world by smell, but could sense the sun through her closed eyes when it shone overhead. She felt that soon, she would open her eyes, and see the beauty of nature. The beauty that she was a part of. Once she was older, she would explore the world, find a partner, and have babies of her own, completing a cycle as old as life itself.

But for now, she was still a baby. Her mother would care for her, as mother’s did. She would grow and play with her siblings, and enjoy the innocence of her youth.

I’m still having a lot of fun working with this theme. I intend to keep it up for awhile longer. Surprisingly, this one was a little harder to come up with an animal for. I think that’s because it was a broad enough prompt that really any animal could fit, and I didn’t have any initial impressions.

I chose a skunk because in they are frequently given such a hard time, simply because their defense mechanism is smell. As far as actually damaging defense mechanisms go, I think it’s a lot safer and easier to deal with than many other animals, like porcupines or bees. But skunks seem to get more than their fair share of dislike.

Hopefully this story will create some better feelings towards skunks. If not, maybe this picture of an adorable skunk baby will.

Great story, are those skunks you neighbours? They're very cute

Thank you :)

Unfortunately, they are not, it's a photo I found on Wikimedia Commons. I wish I could find cute baby skunks.

Smelly skunks, but they're so cute. 😁

Thank you for doing this :) it definitely helps me keep track of them. I've fallen way behind, but I'll catch up this week.

Its a fun story! Thanks for sharing! I sure do think skunks are cute... and am one of the few that doesn't mind/enjoy the smell in small doses anyway... but boy does their chatter sure keep me up at night! I lived for a short while in a bungalow that was open to the air and i was frequented with skunks walking through, when I woke up and turned my light on them they would hide under the bed until I was quiet... came face to face with them a few times... sure am glad they didn't spray!!

I'm glad you enjoyed it :) that's cool! I didn't know they were nocturnal, that makes sense though given how many similar species are. Haha I'm happy for your sake that they didn't, that'd be a bad smell for a bedroom.

Unfortunately I have already voted for @steemitbloggers. As a participant in the freewrite community, they asked first haha.

But I'm extremely happy to know that the @homesteaderscoop made it. I'll try to get more involved. I someday want to do homesteading myself, so I'm sure I would find lots of great tips and kind people amongst the community. Good luck :) I'd be extremely happy for you if you won.
