Is Government Necessary?

in #government7 years ago

I have been reading a lot lately about anarchy and libertarian ideas, I have my own ideas, I actually don’t believe we can have a working society without a government, but this government must only be large enough to handle things which are completely needed by society and are not expendable. I think education should be free, we should all have access to health care, there should be a social security umbrella, so when a person can no longer work this person can be sure he will have enough to live on.

Then you have to think of other things which are essential, we need police, we need garbage collectors, we need firemen, utilities, which I don’t think should be in the hands of businessmen, airports, roads, prisons etc. We of course should eliminate war, that way we don’t need the military, I think a society were everyone has an opportunity doesn’t need war. Now of course all of this things have to be financed, and the only reasonable way is through taxes, but the lowest taxes that can be applied, we should also have free trade but not allow monopolies, no collusion between rival corporations just to squeeze the common man.

I suggest government employees should work as a social service maybe for two years instead of military service, and they should be paid, regardless of rank, the minimum wage.Is this possible, I think it is. And I think it was yesterday @everittdmickey posted an idea which I found interesting https://steemit.com/blockchain/@everittdmickey/1tje5-tax , the creation of crypto currencies for all of these essentials, if this were possible we wouldn’t even have to pay taxes, these services could actually be self financed, like a fireman crypto, a prison crypto, an education crypto, etc.

Of course I don’t know if this is plausible but it sure sounds good. Maybe it is too utopian, but if you look at it anarchy, socialism, communism, democracy are all very good ideas on paper, but so far have been, at the end failures, maybe this idea I have can, of course tweaked by better minds than mine, be made workable.

If something is needed, why must it be forced?

I fully agree. I was just about to write the same comment.

Forced in what way? Most people agree there should be a government, the people who don't want a government are in fact a very small minority.

So you don't care about minorities? What they want? Their rights? Forcing because we must live by the rules created by this 'government' and our money is even stolen to fund it.

So, if a group doesn't want a government they could be given a certain area where they could exercise their ideas. That would be great, we'd see which idea is better. No way to see if this consensus idea really works.

So you don't like my idea?

It sounds like you could be a voluntaryist. A society with no coercion, we could try different systems and find a best one, or maybe there is no best one. If you like tax funded healthcare and police and schools (even though it's proven that these services are far better when privatized) then you could get together like minded and do that. No one stopping voluntary interactions. As opposed to your idea where you have to ask a government to let you live how you want.

Where do I say I want to ask a government to let me live how I want? In fact I am saying government should be as small as possible and have no say except in services which are needed by everyone and can't be provided individually. I don't know where it has been proven those services are far better when privatized, I live in Central America and nearly everything is privatized and because of that we are much poorer, on the other hand my country Honduras, which is the poorest in Central America also has 270 millionaires including 1 billionaire they are worth about 28,ooo million USD as a whole which is more than our yearly GDP, thanks to the privatization of these services. I think you should look at the experiences of these countries before coming to conclusions.

I do not fully understand the idea of crypto-curancies...yet

However I did want to comment on anarchy. The thought sends cold chills down some peoples spine. And I do not want to live in a society where there is no person at the top (anarchy means "rulership of no one") however some people do not understand that when you go to the store that is an anarchy (because no one is in charge)

The store has an owner who puts the price and has employees who are under him, that would be hierarchical, so basically not an anarchy.

without a government,

we need firemen, utilities, which I don’t think should be in the hands of businessmen, airports, roads, prisons etc.
you trust government more than you trust businessmen?

you should really like your neighbor to the south then
it doesn't have much business left..
but it's certainly got government.

Well, if you put it that way, government in most countries is mostly composed of businessmen. By the way which government to the south?

Shirely you've heard of what's happening in Venezuela?

Oh, Venezuela, I have never been there so I don't know what is really going on there I can't have an opinion, but I can tell you historically the most fucked up countries in the whole American continent have been Haiti and Honduras, and they still are, and we have a very friendly for business government, yet if we didn't have over 1 million immigrants in the US and Europe we would probably be eating each other, and not in a good way. So don't think a country ruled by businessmen like Honduras is such a big deal.

better run em off them
I mean all those poor people who are left can
do ok without all those stupid businesses..
right?

I really can't explain it to you, you would have to live down here to understand how things really are. By the way I see you do believe in the MSM when you want to, about Venezuela, I guess they are screwed but couldn't it be fake news? By the way I had a debate with one guy above and one of my answers was this "I live in Central America and nearly everything is privatized and because of that we are much poorer, on the other hand my country Honduras, which is the poorest in Central America also has 270 millionaires including 1 billionaire they are worth about 28,ooo million USD as a whole which is more than our yearly GDP, thanks to the privatization of these services."

certainly...so you should nationalize the country.
how's it working out for Zimbabwe

Never been to Zimbabwe Everitt, but mostly all African countries regardless of the ideology of their goverments are in bad shape, maybe it's because of colonialism?

Extreme privatization: A performance analysis of the "Sandy Springs model"
Abstract
This paper examines the "Sandy Springs-model," which is characterized by outsourcing the vast majority of municipal government services to the private sector. Privatization and outsourcing are widely seen as a way to deliver government services more effectively and efficiently, but few governments have privatized to the extent that Sandy Springs, Georgia, has done so.
A performance analysis was conducted with Sandy Springs against neighboring municipal governments in northern Fulton County. The analysis compared expenditure per capita figures against the corresponding government output with an assigned points system for fiscal years 2008 through 2012. The analysis found that Sandy Springs does not have the most efficient or effective government in the sample, and was below average across the board. Further, cities that turned from a private sector-model to a more traditional model of service delivery found efficiency and performance gains.

See it depends on your point of view, look for this analysis, written by Jack Feldman Iowa State University

I really love everything youve said in this post but there is something that would make sure none of what you have said would come to pass and its GREED. Im from Ghana ,WA and have lived here my whole life and one thing i have noticed about our government is every political party comes to power for money and not the people. They go for huge loans and use majority of the loan to cater for their families , make huge investments overseas and tell us our economy is not in the best shape. I totally agree with everything you have said but the truth is if in every government there are people who only care for themselves and surely there will be people like that, then this perfect system you ve suggested would not thrive.

Ok, your post makes real sense, governments never work out especially in third world countries, I know that what I posted is what I wish would work not that I believe it will come to pass but these guys really think that if there is no government they'll live happily ever after, well I would give a country or place with absolutely no government a couple of months before a group of people have taken over everything, and the common people would be wishing for someone to save them.

That is true. We humans always need to be checked right from infancy to oldage. When we are left to do as we please horrible things will happen . We really need governments but my point is we need people who have the best interests of the nation at heart.
