Butch and Sundance: What Happened To Etta?

Howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas!
We're in a series about two of America's most famous and successful outlaws, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. In case you haven't been following the series, the boys had moved to Argentina in South America to start their lives over and to avoid capture in the U.S.
They were accompanied by the girlfriend of Sundance, Etta Place and they did indeed build a successful ranching operation until they were forced to go on the run again. In yesterday's post they robbed a bank but one of them was shot and wounded by the posse while they were escaping.
The three vanished and a year later Butch and Sundance both got jobs working for different companies. Butch was in Bolivia and Sundance was in Northern Argentina. There are no records of Etta being in South America at that time.
The mysterious Etta Place
So that brings up the question, what happened to her? This has been a question which has baffled historians for over a hundred years and many have searched for clues that would give us some indication of what happened to her and where she ended up.
It's been frustrating researchers because from what I understand there is only one tiny piece of "evidence" that she even returned to the United States, which is the accepted theory.
You call this Evidence?
That one piece of evidence, if you can call it that, is that a woman who someone "thought" matched her description was seen at the South American consulate in San Francisco trying to obtain records of Sundance.
That was in the year 1909, and was the supposed last sighting. But we don't even know if that was her, there is zero proof that it was. So just as she showed up out of nowhere, she seems to have disappeared in the same way. A few researchers think she never left South America but most want to believe that she did.
And of course, Etta Place was a made up name so we don't know her real one or where she came from. The Pinkertons spent alot of time and manpower trying to find her, with no luck.
My take on it
My 2 bit theory is that she is the one who was wounded in the shootout with the posse and she later died of her wound. I mean, it's not like they could have rushed her to the emergency room. She could have lost too much blood by the time they were able to stop riding.
For all we know she's buried in an unmarked grave in Argentina, the location of which was only known to Butch and Sundance.
From what I've learned about Sundance and Etta I don't think he could have stayed in South America without her. And I for sure don't think he could have gone without writing her. No, they were inseparable. I don't think she ever would have left him either. Do you guys?
In further support of my theory, people who were interviewed about their dealings with Sundance revealed someone who was hurting big time. He was always known to be moody but wow, after that point he was really low.
I mean downright sullen, depressed and angry. And getting drunk every night. I think he was trying to drown out his sorrow.
Here they are in happier times, living high on the hog from stolen money:
The lighter version
Now, in the Hollywood version, the movie had Etta leaving and going back, I think it was because she said she didn't want to see them get killed. I don't blame them for using that scenario because it's possible and also very noble and dramatic.
Etta would have been wealthy with her share of the bank robbery and could have started a new life. Like in the movie she could see that it wasn't going to end well. By the way, Kathryn Ross played the role of Etta with excellence.
And here she is with Paul Newman and Robert Redford:
In the next post we'll catch up with Butch and Sundance.
Thanks for reading folks, God bless you all!

You've been knocked out twice by your own electric fence!

I like the Hollywood version better, cowboy :) Yours is a bit more brutal I must say, lol.
Have you ever considered putting this in a book? You make something like chapters of a book all the time so why wouldn't you give it some form and just try to publish it? I'm sure you would have your audience! :)
How are you John? Still sleeping in, lol? I've done so much today!! I started 3 batches of sprouts, baked bread, cooked soup and forgot to do laundry again. Trying to do it for a week and always remember when it's too late for the day. I guess I'll do it once I'll have no clean socks anymore :D
Howdy Martina! I know my version is not the most optimistic but I can't see Sundance being without her for long or at least contacting her. I hope I'm wrong though. I hope she came back with alot of money and had a wonderful life. But the Pinkertons used that picture of her and Sundance for wanted posters everywhere. You tellin me no one recognized her? Eventually someone always recognizes people.
In fact, I forgot to say that on my post today dog gonnit! lol..I'll have to include that tomorrow, today was all messed up ..lost going on when I was trying to rush the thing out.
No there are dozens of good books on these guys, most of them by noted historians. I'm not sure another one is needed, especially by a no name non-historian college drop out! lol. But thanks for the question.
I haven't been sleeping in after that record breaking back to back sleep fest. Your day certainly sounds incredibly productive! Do you take any vitamins or supplements? Just curious.
hey who cares if socks are clean or not? I guess it depends who you're going to be around. I'm usually just around Jack and he actually prefers dirty socks. lol.
Hey the weekend is almost here, any plans?
But it actually doesn't matter what happened as she would be dead by now anyway, lol :D
Dog gonnit? I don't speak cowboy language so you'll have to explain this one :D
I didn't know about all these books as you know that this topic is not one of my favorite ones. I just liked the way you talk about it..
I only take B12 regularly and D in winter. I also get iron shots from time to time but I've always been iron deficient. My body just somehow can't keep the levels right. But for the rest I don't take any supplements. You?
Hahaha, I'm mostly around other people so have to wash them from time to time :D
The weather should be good so we might go to the mountains and I'm going to eat and eat and eat as my surgery is on Monday and I guess that I won't be able to eat that much for at least a week afterwards..
Howdy today Martina! Well, in a way it doesn't matter what happened to Etta but people are interested because it is such a mystery and people love mysteries. Like what ever happened to Emilia Earhart? That sort of thing.
"Dog gonnit" is just an expression of frustration for forgetting something. It really has no meaning though. lol.. I didn't realize that until I started explaining it!
Have you seen the movie? It's a classic. Very good acting, good music, great story, has a love story in it of course, Newman and Redford at their best, and of course most of it is true, it's a comedy also. It's a Western that even you would enjoy Martina, you guys should watch it sometime.
It's common for women to have an iron deficiency and men to have too much. Shots are good and supplements are wonderful. I don't take many supplements now but I'm sure I'll take more as our income improves. I do take vit D in the winter with not as much sun exposure.
I like the sounds of your weekend plans, especially the eating part!
I was never really interested in mysteries so maybe this is why I don't care too much :) But you are right, people like riddles :)
Hahaha, so you're saying nonsense, am I right? :D
Which movie? You didn't mention the title..
You might be right with iron. Even before I went vegan I was always deficient while I ate a lot of red meat, like A LOT. For the rest I have never taken any supplements but I do realize that I was missing vitamin D as I was kinda sad very often and now I feel better. I think that most vitamins you can get from food if you eat balanced diet. That should not be a problem..
Hahaha, yeah! A lot of food this weekend :) What are your plans for these days?
Howdy today Martina! yes I am saying nonsense as usual! lol.
the movie is Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
I agree, we should be able to get most of our nutrients from food if it's good quality food.
This is Saturday already, you guys are probably already on the road. I have no plans. Mrs. J is working all weekend and it's been raining for days so it's too muddy to do much work outside so I'll be hanging around steemit I guess and hoping it will be a good investment of my time. But I bet you guys are going to get some great posting material this weekend right?
Go to discord cowboy, I sent you something..
No, no, we are at home doing some planning.. we might be going out tomorrow..
Howdy again! oh ok, yes I haven't seen discord today, I'll go look, thanks!
I would put money on your theory being right and not the Hollywood version. There is no ways they would have gone their separate ways as they were just too close. This would explain Sundance being down and drowning his sorrows.
Howdy sir cryptoandcoffee! I agree, I don't think there is anyway that they would separate, great minds think alike! lol.
Well that's very sad - your version of the story I mean. And it does sound like a strong possibility. It's too bad that we'll never know.
Howdy sir Keith! well since no one knows then we can always choose to believe Hollywood's version. Historians are really split on that because no one really knows. I was thinking that perhaps if Etta came back to the States she could have had another photo taken and then if that photo is discovered then we would at least know that she made it back here.
But I don't think she would leave him.
Oh, the other thing I forgot to write about is the Pinkertons used that photo of her in wanted posters everywhere with no luck. Now, you know someone would have contacted them if they saw her, eventually.
I'm not sure how good those wanted poster pictures were. Not the highest quality in those days and I think you could almost be "in disguise" just by changing your hairstyle or hat. I do think your theory is correct though. I think if she survived there would have been some letters turn up in the historical record.
yes sir I agree, the Pinkertons had the mail system down pat as far as being able to intercept mail.
What are you doing tonight? In fact look, it's almost the weekend, what kind of wild plans are there for this weekend? Last weekend it was a game of checkers or something. lol.
I have no crazy plans for this weekend. Certainly nothing as wild as a game of chess.! not checkers, geez...
haha! ok so a game of chess would be wild so a game of checkers would be more like it this weekend right? lol. Not drinkin, smokin, eatin out, nothin? Sounds kinda boring up there!
I do live a pretty boring life, it's sad but true.
I would call it a quiet life sir keith, much better than boring. Besides, you are working on things, doing your photography and learning and also building your steemit account instead of out partying or doing something that wastes time and money.
I remember bits and pieces of the Hollywood movie and after reading your series about them I think I want to watch it again. I know they juke up the truth alot in the movies but it still is good entertainment lol
Howdy there tamaralovelace! Well most movies are a joke when they loosely base them on the truth but this one is really pretty accurate, I'm impressed. And their story is so interesting that they didn't have to make much up for it to be outrageously entertaining.
You can get it on Amazon but not Netflix or youtube at the moment. Thanks so much for reading and commenting!
Pretty sound theory, there. It would definitely make sense. Of course, her leaving him might have had a pretty profound effect, too.
Of course, just popping into existance and disappearing again does sort of sound like something out of Dr. Who...
ha! howdy sir fotosdenada! I was just taking a drink of coffee when I read that about Dr. Who and almost spilled it! lol. That struck me as very funny. Yeah, either way he would have been super depressed.
I used to watch Dr. Who all the time and loved it but I never understood half of what was said, especially by the Doctor. Well, maybe half is being generous, more like a third. I mean I only understood a third.
It sounds I like your theory is very correct. If Sundance was tender-hearted enough to miss the old dog as much as he did, I can imagine that losing her would be totally devastating to him . But I think I'll keep believing the movie version! You know me and romantic endings.
haha! howdy Melinda! I really like their version too, and they may be right. Maybe someday a photo of here will emerge, one from a later year in the United States, and then the mystery will be solved.
Yep. Sundance would have been just as sad if she would have left and come back to the states without him, right? I see we are on the same ocd 24 hr schedule!
holy moly! got enough for a vote there Melinda? you and Trudee, wow! lol.
Well, I think he would have been even more depressed if she had gotten killed because if she went back he could somehow try to see her again. But that's just me. I hope alot of people give their opinion.

well howdy esteemapp and thank you for the upvote and the great platform!
Hi janton, you are right, Etta had to die to leave Sundance. It is funny isn't it, we get attached to characters and feel a sense of sadness when they are killed.
Howdy angiemitchell! I agree that she would not have left Sundance.
It sure is funny how we get emotionally attached to characters..and hey, if she got shot while committing a crime then I guess we shouldn't feel too bad.
But I do because of the way they got framed and blamed for two robberies and then had to abandon their homestead and ranch.
Yes janton, Etta was breaking the law but gosh what a likeable trio and I am sure she didn't think of the consequences. The little group have had a dream run with a lot of character.
howdy today angiemitchell! yes Iagree and I think they were beautifully played in the movie. You guys need to see that movie sometime after I complete this series! It's a wonderful mix of action, emotion, comedy, great scenery ...and of course it's based on a true story with alot of accuracy.
The mystery of the disappearing Etta Place.
haha! howdy sir Vincent! yes sir, historians have spent years trying to find any clue of her living back in the United States but unless they find another photo that can be identified as her then I'm sticking to my theory because I don't think those two would have separated do you?
No, I am with you on this. I think she was the one who got shot and died later from her wounds. That seems the logical explanation.
yes sir Vincent I think so too. I don't think there is any evidence that she made it back unless they have ocean liner tickets or something. I read one article that said she went to San Francisco by ship but they didn't say how they knew that.
Purrrrr Fect timing @janton, I just stopped to shower and grab a hot meal.
I will sit right here at the Flyin J in Fairview TN. Exit 182 / i-40.
Reading your GREAT POST. And enjoying an Hour out of the truck in this quiet corner of the Denny's Restraunt. As Tim McGraws song Just to See You Smile plays in the background. Life is stress free, even if for only a short moment.....

howdy krazzytrukker! sorry I missed this earlier, by now you might be driving or stopped for the night?
Your break sounded really nice though and I hope all is going smoothly tonight. Thanks for the kind words.
