The Crazy Tale of Black Beard the Pirate

Howdy folks the photo above is one that I took at sunset last night,
I'm no photographer but I think it's a decent one of that building
Thunderhead.

I was reading about Black Beard the pirate because I like the subject
about these crazy guys(and gals)so I thought I'd share a few things
about him and some parts of his "career" were actually brilliant!

The way he got into piracy was by working his way up, he hired on as
a mate for another pirate named Benjamin Hornigold who was
himself a well known pirate.

Black Beard proved himself to be a hard worker and skilled tactician
and in a few years Hornigold put him in charge of a second ship
which accompanied his main pirate ship. Then later when Hornigold
retired from his pirating career he gave Black Beard his main ship.

[haha! how would you like to have that on your resume? Say, what
did you do before you worked here? "Oh I was a murdering thug who
killed, plundered and ravaged at will!"]

Black Beard quickly traded up by capturing a French slave ship which
he named Queen Annes Revenge, it was a very large ship with 16
canons already but he installed 24 more canons which made it very
threatening and lethal.

By the way that ship was full of slaves at the time and he took them
and the crew to shore and dropped them off which, as crazy as he
was...this was pretty rational behavior for him.

It's interesting that even though he was only out on the High Seas for
2 years wrecking havoc, he was by far the most feared and most
famous pirate that ever lived.

He did this by marketing himself as the baddest, most scary, evil
person that anyone ever wanted to meet up with. And in many ways
that was true, it just depending on the actions of the victims.

If a ship under assault by his crew totally surrendered to him then he
would be merciful and just steal their stuff and possibly their ship but
if they resisted then he would kill everyone and probably sink their
ship as well to make an example of them.

This was a smart business strategy on his part because if the other
ship surrendered that meant less damages to the goods and less
chances of him losing members of his crew.

Not that he loved his crew but they were a necessity to him of course.
Sometimes when he got drunk or when they all got drunk when
celebrating a big capture he would shoot one of his men just to show
them who was boss.

His crazy behavior was enhanced by his appearance too. He was very
tall for that era and large with broad shoulders and had long hair and
a very long beard which he braided. He wore a large black coat with
a wide sash which held at least 3 pistols and he wore 2 swords.

When he got ready for battle he wore all black and wove hemp and
slow-burning fuses into his beard and hair and tied bright red ribbons
on his beard. So he would present a very imposing, evil looking site
with all that smoke pouring out around him and people were terrified
of him!

I don't mean to write a book here so I'll close and continue later so
we can find out what in the world happened to this guy, did he retire
and go into private business? he had the smarts and marketing savvy
that's for sure.

Thanks so much for reading folks, God bless you all!

this is an intersting topic.

thank you @jus10mt and welcome to Steemit!
yes this topic is fascinating to me, my imagination goes wild
thinking how these crazy people did whatever they wanted
and got away with it for many years.

I see you are from the Philippines! very interesting place there with all those islands, it's a little hard for me to comprehend!

If you have a passion for a certain topic or type of cause then write about that, does that sound doable for you?
thanks for commenting!

A lot of the pirates of old were fearsome. They did get away with plenty but they usually died an unsavoury death. Not many got to enjoy retirement.

very true. you reap what you sow..it's a universal law.
very few did enjoy retirement. his old boss Benjamin Hornigold did well
because they eventually hired him to track down pirates
but I don't know how successful he was.

probably worked for the government or big merchants for
a few years and then retired with benefits!

So, he used psychology as well. I didn't know that. I always thought of him as a brute, not as a clever man. Huh. I learn something new every day! I am looking forward to learning more.

yeah talk about psyching people out! the game was usually won as soon as they saw it was him.
I think he was much smarter than the average pirate and he marketed himself brilliantly, he could have been a millionaire if he'd gone into honest business. thanks @squirrelbait!

Jean Lafitte was my favorite, Jon. He actually helped us maintain our independence from Great Britain during The War of 1812...but maybe you already knew that...?

Loved the movie "Black Beard's Ghost," too. Have you seen it? Good old classic, and FUNNY! It has the father from "My Three Sons" as the main character...what was his name...?

Fred MacMurray...just came to me...no google either! Hah.

the movie sounds familiar but I don't remember it.
I remember Jean Lafitte but I don't remember him as being a pirate!
a good pirate? that's a great story.

Yeah...Pretty sure. I'd have to look it up to be 100%--and we're headed out here pretty quick-- but I swear he helped out Andrew Jackson around the time of The Battle of New Orleans; which, as it turned out, was AFTER peace had already been declared back East.

wow to that last sentence..the communications of the day!

Yea...it could take WEEKS to get messages back and forth between Washington and New Orleans in those days.

I was thinking days! boy am I optimistic!

Yep...weeks. Horseback riders, or sailing ship...No telegraph for another 50+ years....

Oh I was a murdering thug who killed, plundered and ravaged at will
Actually, I can think of a few politicians who could put that on their resume!

oh my gosh deirdyweirdy..oh you're talking about in the old days before modern communications when people were easy to keep in the dark right?

Yeah, back when I was young!

in your younger days in Ireland...hey speaking of which, of Ireland..one of the most successful pirates of all time was a woman pirate from Ireland!
I think she captured like 300 or 400 ships or something amazing like that, probably one of your ancestors! she wasn't sweet like you though she was pretty mean.
I will probably do a post about her at least in honor of you.

Yes indeed, Gráinne Mhaol. Definitely one of my ancestors;)

oh is she a famous folk hero to this day?

Well I don't know about the kids nowadays who seem to know very little about anything, but anyone my generation would know the song 'Óró sé do Bheatha Abhaile' which is dedicated to her.

oh wow, what are the words in English?
is it something fairly accurate or wild fantasy?
thank you deirdyweirdy that is very interesting!
do people still speak Gaelic there?

I wonder if the Dread Pirate Roberts from The Princess Bride was modeled after Black Beard in some way. Since I don't know yet how Black Beard stopped pirating (I'll wait to look it up after you finish the tale), the only connection so far is his predecessor retired. In the case of the Dread Pirate Roberts, there were three or four or so, I think, maybe more, and they held things together strictly by reputation, without having to do much killing at all, so that's a departure.

So, betting that he actually fell in love with a princess and went back to marry her is probably a bit farfetched, more than him coming to a most unsavory end.

Then, of course, he could of died by drinking too much, or walking the plank when he was drunk, or some other dumb accident. So many ways to meet your end. :)

lol! I forgot about the Dread Pirate Roberts, that was one of the best movies ever! It seems like most pirates in movies are modeled somewhat after Black Beard so he probably was also.
I'm getting ready to post the end of the tale today. good thinking and memory sir, thank you!
