Can I not balance on a high tree's branch without fear but nevertheless with ful care?
Is fear a better guide or better protection than experience and reflection?

No. Not if you put it that way, not in this example. But a certain situational fear – of darkness, deep water, precipices, attacks, illnesses, etc. – contributes to caution. It just mustn't be stronger than reason.

Fear of darkness seems to be a very good example:
The darkness itself is nothing to fear since darkness is nothing but a lack of light, and although one might say this to oneself, it occurs some emotional fear of this darkness, not of something special that might be unseen, as if darkness be a thing in itself and no thought could correct that feeling...
