If I go back a bit in German history, I come across the introduction of compulsory schooling. Since then, every child has been required to attend a general education school for at least 10 years. That was an achievement! No more uneducated children who could be exploited as cheap labor. Healthy mental development, fostered by educational professionals.
Well, I think we've left that behind. In many places, schools have become mere holding pens and administrative offices, at best suited to extinguishing any remaining joy of learning in kids... There are positive exceptions, but nevertheless, the time is ripe for a shift to compulsory general education. This could be acquired in any conceivable form and doesn't necessarily require a formal school.
