HOW DO WE AS BELIEVERS JUSTIFY LYING?

in HeartChurch3 years ago

Should we?

I was recently in a discussion with a group of men about the possibly of lying being justifiable. A number of ideas and Bible verses were brought up, many of which I've heard for over a decade now. In this video, I talk about some "proof texts" that people use in an attempt to justify lying, and then share other passages to show why I believe what I believe.

what is your religion @papa-pepper if it's okay for you to tell?

I simply believe in the God of the Bible, believe the whole Bible, and love His Son, my Saviour. No specific denomination though

There is no justification for lying. Whether it is white lie or black lie.
@papa-pepper nice to read from you. Been a long while.

Exactly. Glad to hear that you believe so too! Thanks @praise-eu

Lying is a sin. Justifying lies is basically justifying sin. As believers we should tell the truth when we can. If we are uncomfortable sharing the truth, we have the liberty to avoid that question all together.

Very true, and I fully agree. Also, a most excellent point that we cannot be forced to answer questions either. Thanks much!

When people were hiding Jews in Nazi Germany and were asked out it, they lied. People who smuggle Bibles into communist countries lie about it when necessary. But unless you're saving lives or doing works for God that are illegal then you'd better tell the truth.

And yet, when hiding Jews in Nazi Germany, the father of Corrie ten Boom refused to lie. When Nazis asked him if he was hiding Jews, he replied, "Yes, they are under the kitchen table." This was the truth, but the Nazis just laughed and left. Moreover, people like Brother Andrew would "smuggle" Bibles into countries where it was illegal and "hide" them sometimes by laying them on the passenger seat next to him. Because of how amazing and powerful God is, Brother Andrew was waved through. So.... the moral of the story @barncat is that even if you're saving lives and doing works of God that are illegal, you CAN still tell the truth. The Devil is the father of lies, Jesus is the truth. Be careful who you serve.

I would warn that if you can't trust God enough to either keep quiet or tell the truth, you may want to ask Him to increase your faith. Lying is a sin. We should not sin.
