The first camera stabilization system mounted directly on a wheelchair

A dream come true.

Irish filmmaker Christopher Lynch was born with osteogenesis imperfecta, a genetic condition known as “brittle bone” disease that makes bones extremely brittle and limits their ability to bear weight. Throughout his life he claims to have suffered more than 100 fractures, yet he always wanted to work as a camera operator in the film industry, a profession known for demanding great physical effort, especially when using heavy filming equipment.

But rather than abandon the idea, Lynch decided to create a solution. After 5 years of development, he created the Caerus Steadicam, considered the first camera stabilization system mounted directly on a wheelchair. The system was designed to work coupled to the Genny Zero, a self-balancing wheelchair capable of turning in very small spaces and reaching speeds of up to 20 km/h.

This allows operators to perform complex camera movements without the need for additional rails or equipment. The autonomy reaches about 25 km, allowing continuous filming both indoors and outdoors. Another interesting detail is that all the weight of the camera and equipment is distributed in the structure of the wheelchair, eliminating the need for the operator to carry heavy weights.

This does not only benefit people with disabilities and even operators without physical limitations can use the system to reduce fatigue during long recordings. The equipment can also be operated remotely or by camera assistants. In case the user needs to focus solely on controlling the chair. The result is a tool that expands inclusion in the audiovisual industry and at the same time there will be new creative possibilities for camera movements.
