These are sheds with a pit for storing vegetables. Everything that has grown in the garden (potatoes, carrots, beets, cabbage) and preparations in jars (salted and pickled cucumbers and tomatoes, sauerkraut, mushrooms) are put there. An acceptable temperature for storage is maintained in a deep pit - food does not deteriorate or freeze.
It's true, I read the word "shed," but seeing how dilapidated some of them were, I associated them with people living inside. In Venezuela, some people would use them. Here, we “euphemistically” call them "ranches." (ranchos)
