Rainy Day Delight: Homemade “Shim Phool Snack” on a Cozy Off Day
Hello dear friends,
I hope you all are doing well and spending a beautiful life with your loved ones. I wish you all happiness and peace.
Yesterday was my weekly office holiday — the one day I always look forward to for some rest and relaxation. But as luck would have it, the weather decided otherwise! From early morning, the sky was covered with heavy clouds, and the wind hinted at a possible coastal storm. For the last few days, the weather has been playing a strange game — sunshine for a while, then sudden rain, and then back to sunlight again. It’s as if nature itself couldn’t decide whether to smile or cry.
After a busy week at work, I had planned to spend the afternoon outside — maybe go for a drive with my family, have dinner somewhere nice, and enjoy the fresh air. But by noon, the rain started pouring again, washing away all my plans.
That’s when my wife came up with a brilliant idea — “If we can’t go out, why not make something special at home?” Her enthusiasm instantly lifted my mood. After all, cooking together as a family brings a joy that no restaurant can match.
So, our little indoor adventure began — making a special snack called “Shim Phool Snack” (literally, “Flower Snack”). The name sounds unique, and the taste is even better!
We started by boiling potatoes, lentils, and eggs. Then we mixed them with ground onion, garlic, ginger, red chili, cumin, coriander, and a pinch of garam masala to create a deliciously spiced filling. As the aroma of the spices filled the kitchen, the rainy afternoon felt warmer and cozier.
Next, we made a soft dough with flour, wrapped the spicy filling inside, rolled it into small pieces, and shaped them by hand to resemble little flowers — hence the name “Shim Phool.”
Finally, we deep-fried the snacks until they turned golden brown. When served with tomato sauce and fresh cucumber slices, they looked absolutely mouthwatering. The first bite was enough to make us realize — homemade food can easily beat any restaurant dish when it’s made with love.
Our little daughter Nusaiba was clapping and smiling as we enjoyed the snacks together. Outside, rain was tapping gently on the window, while inside, laughter and the smell of freshly fried “Shim Phool” filled the air. I must admit — I ate a bit too much! It was so delicious that we didn’t even feel like having dinner later. We just relaxed, watched TV, and eventually fell asleep, happy and satisfied.
Sometimes, happiness doesn’t need grand plans or fancy outings. A cozy evening at home, some laughter with loved ones, and a homemade snack can turn an ordinary off day into a memorable one.
Yesterday’s rainy evening reminded me once again — joy doesn’t always come from the outside world. Sometimes, it’s right here at home, on a plate full of warmth, family, and love.
Thanks all
