Marmalade hoverfly (Episyrphus balteatus) on a camellia flower, India
Our gardens are full of grand dramas, but sometimes the most breathtaking scenes unfold in miniature. Lately, I've been captivated by a fleeting moment on my Camellia bush, now bursting with heavy, waxy, deep-pink blooms.
Settled right in the pristine cup of one of these flowers was an unexpected visitor: the exquisite Marmalade Hoverfly, Episyrphus balteatus.
This insect is a masterclass in nature’s artistry and disguise. Unlike a stinging wasp or bee, the hoverfly is harmless, yet it wears the stripes proudly. Its slender body is marked with bright orange and black bands—giving it those distinctive "marmalade" stripes.
Resting on the velvety pink Camellia petal, the contrast was simply stunning. The fly looked like a miniature jewel, illuminated against the deep color of the flower.
The Marmalade Hoverfly gets its name from its incredible ability to stop perfectly mid-air, a tiny helicopter searching for pollen. But when it settles, as it did on the Camellia, it seems completely at peace. It meticulously cleans its delicate legs, its large, dark eyes reflecting the light around it, pausing just long enough for you to appreciate its quiet beauty.
These small snapshots remind us that we don't always need dramatic sunsets or sprawling landscapes for inspiration.
Sometimes, true beauty is found in two perfectly matched colors—a bright striped fly resting gently on the smoothest, richest flower in the garden. Look closely; the best moments are often the tiniest.
Himalayan Bird Park, at Shimla in India is famous for wonderful nature and scenetic beauty. I usually visit there once every month. This is how I could capture these moments.
