What To Do Within 72 Hours After Possible Exposure to HIV.
Greetings, great Steemians. Many people panic after having unprotected sex or accidental contact with someone who is HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) positive. The first thing most people do is rush to the hospital for an HIV test. When the result comes out negative, they feel relieved and believe they are safe, but this is a dangerous misunderstanding.
Testing immediately after exposure does not guarantee that you are free from HIV. The reason is that HIV has what is called a "window period." This is the time between when the virus enters the body and when it becomes detectable through standard tests. HIV does not show up instantly. It can take 1 to 3 months before the body produces enough antibodies for a test to detect the virus. So, a negative result right after exposure may simply mean it is too early for detection, not that infection has not occurred. This is where many people make a critical mistake. Instead of relying on early testing alone, the correct and life-saving step is to seek immediate medical help for Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP).
PEP is an emergency HIV prevention treatment. It is a combination of antiretroviral medications that help stop the virus from establishing itself in the body after potential exposure. However, timing is everything. PEP must be started within 72 hours (3 days) after exposure for it to be effective. The earlier it is taken, the higher the chances of preventing infection. The medication is taken daily for 28 days, and when used correctly, it can significantly reduce the risk of contracting HIV.
So, what should you do after possible exposure? |

Do not rely on immediate testing alone; go to a hospital or pharmacy immediately. Ask about PEP, Start the medication within 72 hours. Complete the full 28 day treatment. Follow up with recommended HIV testing after the window period. HIV prevention is not just about testing; it is about taking the right action at the right time. Acting fast can make all the difference.
