So many laws have been passed that dictate what responsible behavior looks like, that few of us are able to make these decisions for ourselves.

Indeed, we've become morally lazy; this has caused many of us to think that adherence to the law automatically makes for righteous behavior, when in fact "lawful" doesn't always imply "just" or "moral".
