We are applying (but obviously didn't have to before). Given as we pay our local (and national) taxes you'd kind of hope there would be "no taxation without representation" but hey!

It takes 2-3 years to apply for citizenship (and costs a fair bit of cash too). And it isn't guaranteed we'd be accepted (even though we have been granted permission to stay and work here)

It is more about having something taken away from you.

Before you go to live somewhere you should check out what you need to do to ensure you can live and work somewhere and what rights you have when you get there. Which we did 12 years ago when we moved here. Then we have those rights taken away (and went through months and months anxiety as to whether we would meet the criteria for staying after brexit).
