First Samurai, also known as The First Samurai, is a video game that was created in 1991 by Vivid Image and released by Image Works (both are British video game companies). This game is a combination of a fighting game and platform game. It was initially made available for other platforms and the Super Nintendo/Super Famicom in 1993.

The Story

The story begins with the Demon King leaving his mountain hideout and attacks the First Samurai and his master. The First Samurai is powerless against the Demon's sorcery and falls under his control, leaving his master to face the Demon alone. Unfortunately, the master is defeated in battle and passes away. However, with his last bit of life, the master summons the Wizard Mage to aid in the fight against the Demon King. In fear of being defeated, the Demon King flees to the future.

Grief-stricken and filled with revenge, the young samurai seeks the guidance of the Wizard Mage to learn the art of magic. With a magical sword in hand, the young samurai sets out to pursue the Demon King into the future and into the unknown...

The Graphics and Sound

The visuals in the game are not technically top quality, but they have a unique charm that adds to the experience of exploring a dark, demon-filled Japanese setting with flying monsters. The game also features an interesting difference between playing in feudal Japan and different eras in the future.

The soundtrack of the game is exceptional, especially the first track of the first stage, which is one of the best tracks from the Super Nintendo era. There is even a secondary track available if you want to change things up, or you can disable the soundtrack altogether. The later stages also have great tracks. When you play in the future and fly inside and outside a space train, there is no music, which adds to the realism of being in space without an atmosphere for sound to occur. The sound effects, on the other hand, are adequate but not outstanding. They can be underwhelming or even be silly at times, such as when the "hallelujah" track plays after hitting an item that drops food for some health recovery.

The Gameplay

The main character in the game has limited moves but can pick up sub-weapons like daggers and axes to aid in the journey. A Wizard Mage icon can clear enemies from the screen.

Initially, the character wields a sword, but losing all health will cause the sword to disappear and the health to fully restore. However, the Force meter will also be depleted, requiring the player to defeat enemies to restore it and retrieve the sword.

The game stands out from others in its genre due to the addition of a bell item that can be used to remove obstacles in certain areas, adding an extra layer of challenge.

The game's difficulty varies, with some levels being easy while others can be frustrating. However, the game does not follow a progressively increasing difficulty pattern, and the challenge level jumps around randomly.

Replay value is mediocre. No password saves can make starting from the start level to get to where you left off is tedious. Save states feature on emulators can make it better.

My Verdict

Although First Samurai may not be the most outstanding game on the SNES, it's not the worst either. It's worth picking up for some enjoyable and straightforward fun. While the storyline isn't particularly gripping or innovative, the game is still entertaining.

Play it on the Super Nintendo/Super Famicom or play it on a good emulator.

Let's keep on gaming in the free world!
