Watch a film inspired by real-life stories or people. Example films: Hidden Figures, The Pursuit of Happyness, Hotel Rwanda, Erin Brockovich
Citation is a real-life event story movie that was produced in 2020and directed by Kunle Afolayan. It's a story about a young lady named Moremi who was sexually harassed by Professor N'Dyare at Obafemi Awolowo University during her master's degree at the university. Professor N'Dyare began to develop feelings for her when she was trying to teach him how to drive his manual car. The attempt to rape Moremi started in the professor's house, where he organized a small party for the students.
After the party, Professor N'Dyare asked Moremi to wait, and he tried to convince her to make love to him, but Moremi refused and escaped this illicit act using karate tactics that her boyfriend, Koyejo, had taught her. She reported this case to the university management and the Senate. Professor N'Dyare was called by the Senate, and a committee was formed to investigate what caused the issue between them. As time went on, Moremi visited Senegal to learn more about his past.

With the help of Cardosa, who works at one of the universities situated in Senegal, Moremi seeks justice because the professor once exploited Cardosa.
Did the movie make you more curious about the real-life story?
The movie made me learn more about real-life events, although the story of the movie is based on real events where most lecturers in Nigeria request sex in order to pass students who cooperate with them.
Students who refuse to cooperate fail. It's not new; in fact, some are doing it secretly without involving anyone, and those who are caught have been doing it for a long time. Even if they have sex with some students, they will not allow her to graduate because they enjoy the romantic relationships that occur between them.

For instance, during my university days, the HOD from the Department of English wooed a student by inviting her to his office for a romantic relationship, unknowingly to the lecturers. The student recorded his conversation and reported him to the appropriate authorities.
The panel was set up to understand the root of his actions, as he knew the implications of the matter. The lecturer was removed as Head of Department and also resigned from the university as a result of misconduct.
It's a common occurrence that often appears in the headlines, where lecturers continue to harass some students for sexual activities. Video and audio are the only proofs because their words to defend themselves are usually insufficient.
Which scene or moment felt the most powerful or emotional?

The scene that made me feel more powerful was when she narrated everything the professor did to her. She exposed all the secrets the professor had kept while lecturing those students. The scene that touched me the most was when Moremi traveled back to Senegal and met Vincent Cardoso, who narrated all the illicit acts carried out by the professor, including the abandoned child a student had for him, often due to such bad behavior.
I felt emotionally disturbed by that scene. How can a heartless human being engage in those illicit acts without considering another's feelings? Koyejo, her boyfriend, inspires her a lot and supports her throughout the process. She gives her encouragement that she can win over the professor if she does not relent.
What lessons did you learn from the true story portrayed?

I learned a lot of lessons from the movie, among them the following:
➡️Students who go through sexual harassment must speak up so that society can stand by them, showing that they are not alone in the process. Because some students who go through this process keep silent, which one way or another affects their academic performance, depression and death.
➡️Another thing I learned is that poor students usually request grades in which they will make themselves available for the lecturers to engage in sexual acts with them. Brilliant students cannot do that because they will make sure to put in more effort in order to succeed in their academic careers.
➡️This movie serves as an awareness campaign for young students who experience sex-for-grades to report to the appropriate authorities so that justice can prevail rather than taking the law into our own hands. The lecturers in the department are normally involved in this act, and it's necessary to carry everyone along so that they can understand what you are going through.
How did it make you feel about the people or time period it represented
The actors used by the producer to produce this movie are the best when it comes to acting movies in Nigeria. The producer selects the best who can make the movie interesting and also depict what is currently happening in our society. This movie was made available to the general public when the news broke about a professor at Obafemi Awolowo University demanding sex from female students.
The young ladies recorded the voices of their lecturers on a tape about what was happening to them. The university committee later dismissed the professor so that it could serve as a warning for others who may engage in this atrocity.
Every aspect of sexual harassment on the campus that the movie covers is an important issue that the university community must educate their students to speak up about what is happening on the campus. The bold actions that Moremi takes to defend herself can be done by a few students, whereas others are afraid due to the discrimination that may occur within society.
