Girl Children are not Important in the Society? — An Afterthought
One belief that many people accept as normal but should be questioned is the idea that the girl child is inferior to the boy child. This harmful belief has been deeply rooted in many societies, including Nigeria, where it influences how girls are treated in families and communities. Despite being widely accepted, it is a damaging mindset that restricts girls’ opportunities and affects their self-worth.
Actually, a girl child should not be valued as inferior. The practice of seeing the girl child as less important is a bad belief that can ruin social relationships and hinder societal progress. Unfortunately, this mentality is difficult to change because many people, especially men, view it as acceptable or even beneficial. Girls are often seen as less worthy of education and freedom, leading to many restrictions that can cause low self-esteem and limit their potential. This thinking is questionable and should be challenged because it harms both individuals and society as a whole.
Why do you think people rarely challenge it? |
|---|
People rarely challenge this belief because many think it is God’s plan for girls to be under the influence of men. This misunderstanding often comes from misinterpreting religious stories, such as the creation story of Adam and Eve, where some believe women were created to be subordinate to men. This religious justification, combined with cultural traditions and social pressure, makes it difficult for people to question or oppose the belief. Additionally, economic dependence and fear of social backlash discourage many from speaking out.
What could improve if this “normal” way changed? |
|---|
If this harmful belief changed, many aspects of society would improve significantly. For example, Nigeria’s economic system would benefit greatly because more girls would be educated and empowered to contribute to the workforce. This would lead to increased productivity, innovation, and economic growth. Socially, communities would become more equal and peaceful, with reduced discrimination and violence. Families would also benefit from healthier and more educated members, creating a stronger foundation for future generations.
What might be lost if it disappeared completely? |
|---|
If this belief disappeared completely, some traditional power structures and privileges held by men might be challenged or lost. Certain cultural practices that reinforce male dominance could decline, which might cause discomfort or resistance in some communities. However, these losses are minor compared to the significant gains in equality, justice, and social development that would result from valuing the girl child equally.

Greetings friend, I like that you are rooting and advocating for women and I totally agree with you that women should also have a say in the society and also be given a chance just as men are given.
But I also like to talk about the biblical aspect of women. In the Bible especially in the context of marriage women were meant to be submissive to their husbands because if they are not the marriage will not stand and you wouldn't want your wife to challenge you as a man. That is why God brought the idea of wife's submission to the husband. God did not say a women should be discriminated by men or their society it's just a misconception of the word of God and wrong doctrines.
