Hey everyone. I am @elsa-queen. I feel truly grateful and happy to be a part of the wonderful Nigerians community. I hope all members of the Steemit are doing well. So friends sharing my thoughts and creativity in such a supportive and motivating community is always a pleasure for me.

I am happy to take part in this contest and present my entry on the topic “To Be Honest”. I sincerely hope you enjoy reading it. My heartfelt thanks to the honorable @sahmie for organizing this inspiring contest.

Do you agree that being honest is costly? Has it ever caused some e.g pain or regret?

Yes I personally agree friends that the honesty often comes at a cost. It is not easy to tell the truth. It is especially in a society where people prioritize convenience and benefit over the truth. I have felt many times in my life that honesty has caused me temporary loss, pain and loneliness. But despite this I have not abandoned the truth. Sometimes it happened that a close friend's heart was broken because of telling the truth. A rift arose in a relationship or people became angry with me. On some occasions I had to lose my right because I did not take the path of lies or flattery. At that time there is a lot of regret and sorrow in the heart. A person asks himself whether it was really necessary to tell the truth? Wouldn't it have been better to remain silent? But with the passage of time, one thing becomes clear that honesty, although it causes temporary pain gives inner peace. Lying may give temporary benefit. But it always keeps the conscience restless. Honesty strengthens a person's character and builds self confidence. So even though I had to pay the price for honesty. I don't regret it. Because ultimately truth is the path that enables a person to meet their own eyes.

Can you be honest without hurting people's feelings?

Yes I think a person can speak honestly without hurting the feelings of others. It requires understanding and feeling. Speaking the truth is important but the way in which the truth is spoken is even more important. Most people are hurt not by the truth but by the harsh and cruel way in which the truth is spoken. If it is spoken with kindness, respect and sincerity. Then the other person will easily accept it. Honesty does not mean that we should say everything without hesitation and in a bitter manner. Sometimes silence is also a form of honesty especially when the truth may cause unnecessary pain to someone. Speaking at the right time with the right words and with compassion strengthens relationships rather than damaging them. If the truth is spoken with a spirit of goodwill. It reaches the heart rather than stinging it. Therefore I believe that a person can speak the truth. The only condition is that he/she speaks his/her words while taking into account the feelings of others.

Have you ever told a lie to protect someone?

Yes, I have lied to save someone at some point in my life, and I understand that in some situations, doing so is not a sign of human weakness but of human compassion. Not every lie is bad, the intention is also very important. Sometimes telling the truth can hurt someone deeply or break a relationship forever, so silence or a small lie can support someone in such a situation. For example, if a person is already in mental stress or pain and the truth makes them break even more, then at that time it feels better to hide the truth or twist the matter. I have seen moments where it was easy to tell the truth, but the consequences could have been very harsh, so I preferred to protect someone's feelings. However, such a lie should be temporary and should be done with the intention of benefit, not for personal gain. I sometimes felt the burden of not telling the whole truth, but I was certainly relieved that it did not harm anyone. To me, the real importance is the intention, because if the intention is to save someone, such a lie would not weigh so heavily on the conscience.

Is it okay to keep a secret if it could hurt someone?

I think that if a secret can harm someone. Then hiding it is a very delicate and difficult decision. In some situations, silence is better, especially when there is a fear of hurting someone's feelings, mental anguish, or breaking up a relationship. It is not necessary to tell every truth right away, because some truths take time and can be greater than a person can bear. But on the other hand. If that secret is causing someone permanent harm or may cause more suffering in the future. Then silence also becomes a kind of injustice. In such a situation. It is better to tell the truth gently, wisely, and with the right time. Friends keeping a secret can be right as long as it does not endanger rights, honor, or safety for someone. To me the main thing is intention and effect friends. If the purpose of keeping a secret is to protect someone and there is no greater harm from it, then silence is understandable. But if silence is having a negative impact on someone's life, then facing the truth is the best way forward, no matter how difficult it may be.
