SEC S15W5 : My Country and Her Mineral Resources

Indonesia is an archipelagic country located off the coast of Southeast Asia, between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. The capital of Indonesia is Jakarta. Indonesia gained independence on August 17 1945.

Indonesia is known as a country that is rich in culture and abundant natural wealth such as gold, petroleum, natural gas, coal and marine products which are spread across various regions of Indonesia. Not only that, Indonesia also has popular international tourist destinations such as Bali.

By the way, to coincide with Valentine's Day, namely February 14 2024, Indonesia will hold its fifth direct general election to elect the president and vice president.

The existence of various types of minerals is not only abundant, but also has excellent quality. The main mineral resources in Indonesia include Oil and Gas Mines, Nickel, Tin, Coal and Gold. This natural wealth is one of the great potentials that Indonesia has in economic development. Not only that, Indonesia also still has reserves of other mineral resources such as bauxite, iron ore, copper, silver and others. However, currently not all of this potential has been exploited by the government due to several considerations, including environmental damage.

The government has made every effort to manage these mineral resources for the welfare of its citizens. This statement is very relevant to increasing infrastructure development, providing free medical facilities, social assistance and educational scholarships. Indonesia was also able to face the pandemic crisis very well with various assistance programs for its citizens. One that is impressive is the Pre-Employment Card Program. This program aims to develop Job Competencies aimed at job seekers, workers/laborers who have been laid off due to the pandemic. Apart from job training provided by professional mentors, the government also provides pocket money for three months during the training. The government's readiness to overcome crisis situations is an indicator that mineral resource management has succeeded in increasing state income.

The biggest challenge for the Indonesian government currently is managing mineral resources into products that can compete with other countries. This is important to do because so far the use of mineral resources has only been exported in raw form to other countries. If Indonesia is able to process it itself well into a product, of course the country's income will be higher and the benefits to society will also be greater and more evenly distributed.
