All Aboard! 🚂………...North Cascade Wanderings
All aboard! 🚂
Yesterday, Bill, Agi and Olivia took grandpa and grandma, to the Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad! It was the maiden voyage after it’s restoration.
Some facts about the engine:
built in 1922
it’s wheel arrangement 2-8-2 (2 in the front; 8 in the middle and 2 at the rear)
tractive effort: 27,000 (horizontal pulling force)
This engine number 70 is built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works. It was quite the sight to see!
They began restoration just over a year ago. Amazing that they could overhaul something that big and that old so quickly. We were excited!
The train depot is located in Elbe, Washington and took about 2 hours to reach from North Bend. Elbe was transformed by the arrival of the train in 1904 into a logging and tourist hub. The train brought out massive amounts of timber to the town combined with the creation of Mt. Rainier National Park helped to contribute to the growth.
The passenger cars today are from a mix of old cars brought to the railway for use on the line. Today, the train pulls a couple of seated passenger cars, a stock car outfitted with restrooms and a snack bar as well as an open window stock type cars for picture taking! That particular car was located directly behind the engine and tender-which is exactly where we headed! We’ve been train buffs for a long time, but don’t get much exposure to it anymore. I don’t mind the noise, and boy was it loud, nor the smell and the smoke! I love it all!
We crossed an old trestle which according to the narrative, when you could catch it, was original from the line. Here’s a couple of shots….
….looking down…..
….and then alongside…..
A pretty cool perspective! 😁
Even Mt. Rainier wasn’t in hiding as is usual for the volcano.
It’s as if it knew it was a special day for the engine!
Now some of you might wonder…..in all that smoke, steam and noise-how did baby granddaughter Olivia do? She was very interested! In watching her over the weekend, she is an observer. Even to the point of watching how something is done- you can see her figuring it out. She never cried from the noise or the sights or the people. She just took it all in.
Agi holding her while she takes it all in.
More scenery….
Nearing the end of the ride, the conductor came through to punch our tickets.
I’ve got lots more pictures and will share more in the coming posts. It was a lovely day spent with the family. I sure do wish we could have stayed longer, but they have work as do I in a couple of days. 😔
My steps for today:
That’s gonna be it for me. Take care and enjoy the rest of your day wherever you are! 🙏🌏🙏

BSB Proverbs 22:1-11
A good name is more desirable than great riches;
favor is better than silver and gold.
The rich and the poor have this in common:
The LORD is Maker of them all.
The prudent see danger and take cover,
but the simple keep going and suffer the consequences.
The rewards of humility and the fear of the LORD
are wealth and honor and life.
Thorns and snares lie on the path of the perverse;
he who guards his soul stays far from them.
Train up a child in the way he should go,
and when he is old he will not depart from it.
The rich rule over the poor,
and the borrower is slave to the lender.
He who sows injustice will reap disaster,
and the rod of his fury will be destroyed.
A generous man will be blessed,
for he shares his bread with the poor.
Drive out the mocker, and conflict will depart;
even quarreling and insults will cease.
He who loves a pure heart and gracious lips
will have the king for a friend.
