잔디가꾸기=민들레 죽이기

북미의 가장 흔한 집은 단독주택입니다.
단독주택의 장점이자 단점 중 하나는 앞뒤로 마당(yard)가 있다는 거죠.
프라이빗한 야외공간을 제공하지만 이것을 관리하는게 또 만만치 않은 노동력을 요구한답니다.

저희집도 북미에서 가장 흔한 단독주택형태인데 크지는 않지만 앞뒤로 약간씩 잔디밭이 있어요.
눈이 쌓인 겨울에는 차 나가는 길에 있는 눈만 치우면 되는데 눈이 다 녹고 날씨가 더위지기 시작하니 집집마다 잔디깎이 돌아가는 소리와 스프링쿨러가 물 주는 소리가 들리기 시작합니다.

저희 가족은 캐나다에 온지 얼마 되지 않아서 이제 첫 잔디관리를 시작했어요.
사실 잔디밭에는 이미 곳곳에 노랑노랑 민들레가 예쁘게 피어있었습니다.
그리고 어제는 제 룸메이트가 민들레를 죽이는 약을 마구 쳤지요.
덕분에(?) 오늘은 까맣게 죽는 민들레가 있네요.
안타깝고 미안한 마음이 들었습니다.

민들레도 참 예쁜 꽃인데 왜 죽여야 할까요?

민들레가 있으면 잔디가 잘 자라나지 못한다고 합니다. 상점에 들어가서 잔디관리 코너에 가면 민들레 죽이는 약이 한면을 채우고 전시되어 있더라구요. 필수품인가 봅니다.

그렇다면 잔디 관리를 하지 않고 초록초록 들풀들이 자라나게 두면 되지 않을까요?

잔디 관리를 하지 않으면 마당이 지저분해보이고 시에서 경고가 들어온다고 합니다. (저희는 아직 받아본 적이 없지만 어디는 빨래를 밖에 널어놓는것도 안된다더라구요.)
그리고 들풀들을 그냥 두면 크게 자라서 마당을 마당답게 사용하기 힘든 지경이 오기도 하죠.

그래서 결국 잔디관리를 잘 해야하고
그러려면 노랑민들레를 가차없이 죽여버려야 한다는 슬픈 결론에 도달합니다.

미안해 민들레야......
나는 왜 그 씨들을 마구 마구 날려주었던 걸까......
