Ukiyo-e Time 👹🍣🎎 Wonderful Japan ENG-GER
Today, we're treating ourselves to another ukiyo-e picture. This Japanese art form reached its peak during the Edo period and was best known for its colorful woodblock prints and drawings, which are still very popular today.
The Library of Congress has collected a large number of these woodblock prints and made them available in digital form on its website. Fortunately, these images are not subject to copyright, so I am able to share them with you from time to time here in this blog.
Today's image shows a classic Japanese woodblock print in which Mount Fuji towers majestically in the background above a tranquil winter landscape. In the foreground is a traditional building with a snow-covered roof, whose warm colors contrast beautifully with the cool, clear winter air. The trees are covered with fresh snow, and the composition harmoniously draws the eye from the tranquil everyday scene in the foreground to the iconic Mount Fuji, which is considered a symbol of stability and spiritual significance in Japan.
I'm not sure who created this image, but the artist has struck a careful balance between nature and architecture, with the landscape appearing not just documented but poetically idealized.
And how I would love to see Mount Fuji in winter myself — up close, as in this picture, with lots of snow around it. But I'm not sure if I would still be able to see such a traditional building today, because houses in Japan naturally look much more modern now. It's probably time for a trip back in time. That's something I should slowly start planning...

Auch heute gönnen wir uns mal wieder ein Ukiyo‑e Bild. Diese japanische Kunstform hatte ihren Höhepunkt in der Edo‑Zeit, und war vor allem durch ihre farbigen Holzschnitte und Zeichnungen bekannt, die sich auch heute noch großer Beliebtheit erfreuen.
Die Bücherei des Kongresses der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika hat eine große Anzahl dieser Holzschnittdrucke gesammelt und stellt sie auf ihrer Webseite in digitaler Form zur Verfügung. Und glücklicherweise unterliegen diese Bilder dort keinem Urheberecht, so dass ich sie euch ab und zu hier in diesem Blog vorstellen darf.
Das heutige Bild zeigt einen klassischen japanischen Farbholzschnitt, in dem der Berg Fuji majestätisch im Hintergrund über einer ruhigen Winterlandschaft aufragt. Im Vordergrund steht ein traditionelles Gebäude mit schneebedecktem Dach, dessen warme Farben einen schönen Kontrast zur kühlen, klaren Winterluft bilden. Die Bäume sind von frischem Schnee überzogen, und die Komposition lenkt den Blick harmonisch vom ruhigen Alltagsszenario im Vordergrund hin zum ikonischen Vulkan Fuji, der in Japan als Symbol für Beständigkeit und spirituelle Bedeutung gilt.
Ich bin mir nicht sicher, von wem dieses Bild ist, aber der Zeichner hat für eine sorgfältige Balance zwischen Natur und Architektur gesorgt, wwoebi die Landschaft nicht nur dokumentiert, sondern poetisch idealisiert erscheint.
Wie gerne würde ich auch gerne mal den Fuji im Winter sehen - ganz aus der Nähe wie in diesem Bild, mit viel Schnee herum. Ich bin mir aber nicht sicher, ob ich dabei auch heute noch so ein traditionelles Gebäude zu sehen bekomme, denn die Häuser sehen in Japan natürlich heute viel moderner aus. Wahrscheinlich wird es mal Zeit für eine Zeitreise. Das wäre doch mal etwas, was ich so langsam mal planen und angehen sollte...
