Chapter 13: The Architect and the Acid Hound /
The Sleeper's Edge and the Phantom's Grip | 第十二章:潜伏者的利刃与幽灵之握
My finger dug into the trigger. The pulse pistol hummed, heavy in my grip. My hand was shaking so bad the targeting laser just drew jagged red scribbles all over Chen’s dusty coat.
"Twenty years?" I choked out. The air down here tasted like rust and battery acid. "You programmed Lu Yan? Before we even met? Before the precinct even hired her?"
Chen ignored the gun entirely. Walked right past me like I wasn't there. Those freaky microscopic nano-weavers in his palm? They were already stitching fake skin back over his black skeletal hand. He just strolled to the edge of the transit platform and stared down into the endless magnetic trench.
"Never a cop, Yun Feng," his voice bounced off the damp concrete walls. "Prototype 73. A blank-slate wetware weapon. Built her neural architecture myself. But the board got greedy. Wanted cheap executioners. So I buried a backdoor in her code, nuked the lab servers, and vanished. Played the senile info-broker in the slums. Waiting."
I thought about her. Lu Yan. How she’d smile after a grueling 48-hour shift. The paranoid way she checked my armor seals before we kicked down a door. All those nights covering my six in the rain-slicked alleys of the lower sectors.
"All fake?" My voice cracked. So much for the cold logic of my cyber-implants.
"The human mind is a tragic thing. She didn't know it was fake. She actually believed she was your partner," Chen said, unblinking. "Only way to beat corporate psych-scanners. But the signal I sent tonight? It shattered the partition. Overwrote the fake personality. The woman you knew is gone."
"And you left her to melt in a puddle of neural acid!" Pure, burning anger finally cut through the shock.
Chen turned his head. Those golden geometric patterns in his eyes spun like complex vault locks. "Melt? You really don't get how durable my designs are, do you? The acid just burns off the useless organic fat. Removes the human bottleneck."
Before I could even process how messed up that was, a tectonic rumble shook the floor grates. Not a train.
A heavy, wet thud echoed from the vent shaft we just dropped out of. Then another. Something was climbing down. Fast.
Hiss... clang... hiss... clang...
Green acid dripped from the ceiling grate, sizzling on the concrete. I pointed the gun up, heart hammering against my ribs.
Metal shrieked. The heavy steel grate above us ripped clean off its hinges and vanished into the dark. A silhouette dropped. Hit the tracks with a bone-shattering crash that cracked the concrete beneath it.
Emergency lights flickered, casting bloody shadows. It was her. Or what was left of her.
Acid had eaten the left half of her face. Just a chrome skull and a blazing red optical sensor now. Synthetic skin hung off her in smoking strips. Underneath? Pure military-grade servos and myomer muscle. No cop uniform. Just a brutal combat chassis.
She stood up. Metal joints popped. Totally ignored the highly corrosive acid still chewing on her flesh. In her right hand, she dragged a twin-barrel heavy plasma cannon. A literal siege weapon.
"Target acquired." The voice was pure synthesized static. Demonic. "Extermination protocol: Maximum Force."
She wasn't alone, though. Four more pairs of red eyes ignited in the tunnel darkness behind her. The Bronze Corps. Corporate hunters. They caught up.
Chen let out a weary sigh. Dug into his coat and tossed a jagged black shard at my feet. It pulsed with a sick violet light.
"Lesson one of the real game, kid," Chen said. His right arm shifted. Flesh slid back, and a glowing fusion blade snapped out of his forearm. "Nostalgia gets you killed."
He shot me a cold, dead look. "Slot that shard into your neural port. It's gonna hurt like hell. Sixty percent chance it fries your frontal lobe. But if you want to process data fast enough to live through the next three minutes? You don't have a choice. Pick it up."
Down on the tracks, her plasma cannon started to hum, glowing as bright as a dying sun.

Yes, I’ve enjoyed your latest installment. It confirms that you’re maintaining the same high standard. In this filthy, decaying world—where heavy air mingles with rust, and bodies are more than just flesh, becoming a contaminated blend of mind and metal—we are dropped into the middle of a cinematic, visually rich experience where, despite the fear, traces of humanity remain.
You know how to tell a story and keep the reader on the edge of their seat. That is literature.
Dear @almaguer, I am deeply moved by your words. To have the world of Hell's Eye described as a "cinematic, visually rich experience" and to be called "literature" is the highest honor for a writer.
You perfectly captured the core of this cyberpunk universe—the fragile struggle to maintain that last trace of humanity amidst rust, decay, and cold metal. It is readers and curators like you, who read with such profound insight, that fuel my passion to keep writing.
Thank you for walking through this dark world with me. Your support means everything!
This BOOMING vote is yours and well deserved!

I am confused. I thought Yun Feng and Lu Yan "just" met and now they are old colleagues?
I believe It should read all episodes again...
Haha, please don't doubt your memory, @wakeupkitty.pal! You didn't miss anything, and you definitely don't need to re-read everything (unless you want to!).
You are exactly right: they did appear to just meet earlier in the story. The revelation that they share a hidden past and are actually "old colleagues" is a deliberate plot twist I planted in this chapter. In the world of Hell's Eye, almost everyone is wearing a mask, and buried secrets have a way of catching up with them.
Your confusion is exactly the reaction I was hoping for before the big reveal! The true nature of their past will unfold as we dive deeper. Thanks for paying such close attention to the characters!
I’ve read it again, but I can’t find anywhere that says these two are agents and that they’ve met before, so this whole relationship strikes me as completely out of the blue. I also find it strange that, when Yun Feng isn’t 100 per cent human himself, he finds it odd that someone else might not be human either, and might instead be artificial – that is, programmed, or both. She wasn’t really a spy either… More like she’d been snatched up by a greedy owner and misused. Very realistic indeed.
Wow, I am truly touched that you read it so closely and even re-read it! Having a reader like you is a writer's greatest luck. 😭
You made some incredibly sharp points! Regarding their past connection, I intentionally hid some clues to build a mystery, but I completely agree that the reveal might have felt a bit too sudden ("out of the blue"). I will definitely pay more attention to foreshadowing in the future!
Your analysis of Yun Feng is brilliant. You caught a core psychological conflict in him: even though he is heavily cyber-augmented, he still desperately clings to the illusion of his remaining "humanity." So, when he encounters a consciousness that is entirely programmed, it shatters his comfort zone and terrifies him.
And your interpretation of her as a victim misused by a greedy owner is 100% spot on. That tragedy is exactly the cruel reality I wanted to portray in this cyberpunk world. Thank you so much for this deep and insightful review, it really inspires me! 🦾✨
