You are exactly right: they did appear to just meet earlier in the story. The revelation that they share a hidden past and are actually "old colleagues" is a deliberate plot twist I planted in this chapter. In the world of Hell's Eye, almost everyone is wearing a mask, and buried secrets have a way of catching up with them.
Your confusion is exactly the reaction I was hoping for before the big reveal! The true nature of their past will unfold as we dive deeper. Thanks for paying such close attention to the characters!
I’ve read it again, but I can’t find anywhere that says these two are agents and that they’ve met before, so this whole relationship strikes me as completely out of the blue. I also find it strange that, when Yun Feng isn’t 100 per cent human himself, he finds it odd that someone else might not be human either, and might instead be artificial – that is, programmed, or both. She wasn’t really a spy either… More like she’d been snatched up by a greedy owner and misused. Very realistic indeed.

You made some incredibly sharp points! Regarding their past connection, I intentionally hid some clues to build a mystery, but I completely agree that the reveal might have felt a bit too sudden ("out of the blue"). I will definitely pay more attention to foreshadowing in the future!
Your analysis of Yun Feng is brilliant. You caught a core psychological conflict in him: even though he is heavily cyber-augmented, he still desperately clings to the illusion of his remaining "humanity." So, when he encounters a consciousness that is entirely programmed, it shatters his comfort zone and terrifies him.
