Like you I figured most out myself. I remember those clubs started and for some reason people left CCC to go to??? Next many grew and I remember I asked someone about the clubs but never understood the explanation but also good never be in one since I paid the prizes for contests in Steem. Today a club no longer matters, same for all the tries like burning Steem.
I agree with you that those who has to find their way themselves are in average the long lasting and loyal Steemians. They post even without an upvote and because they like it.

It isn't always easy to be present and to comment, but for the biggest part this can be learned and becomes a habit.
