Food Thought #1| "Be mindful of who you are"

Being mindful is the ability to be aware of how you are relating to what's happening right here, right now. What does that really mean? It means being alert, paying close attention, and being conscious of all activities around you.

Now, the big question is, "Are you mindful or mind-full?"

I was in the church one morning when my pastor said, Ladies, be mindful of yourselves. Be aware of who you are, what you carry, and what you possess.

I began to ask myself, Nina, do you really know who you are? Do you know what you carry and possess? See, sometimes we feel we know, but we lose consciousness and alertness when faced with certain situations.

A scenario played out just recently when the death of a popular actor in the film industry in my country was announced. The various videos of him that I watched played something to me: this guy was mindful of who he was until he was carried away by activities around him, and he lost it.

See, life is deeper than we think. Being mindful of you means being alert. Pay attention; it's hard to slow down and notice things in a busy world. This popular actor was lost in the busy world. A video of him surfaced where he was busy with the world and, at the same time, talking about dying.

Being mindful of who you are means living in the moment. Try to intentionally bring an open, accepting, and discerning attention to everything you do. If this actor had paid attention to his surroundings, he would have missed the death, but he was "mind-full and not mindful."

Meditation helps one be mindful of oneself. Sometimes we need to sit back and meditate, reflect, and gain understanding about who we are and what we carry. It's only when you are mindful that you can take possession.

What you eat at a given time also helps you to be mindful. I will continue to illustrate with this actor; he was said to have drunk so much with friends and colleagues as their journey back home began.

When you are mindful of who you are, there are certain insults you won't take in life. It doesn't matter if you wear the latest Gucci, Versace, or Ferrari; being mindful of who you are keeps you on track to live a fulfilled life.

Imagine our heavenly father being mindful of us. How much more are we not mindful of ourselves? God is so mindful of everyone in this world; it will also be nice if we help him to be mindful of ourselves.

Always nice to see posts like this which serve as reminders to each and every one of us for yes, perhaps things we "know" but are not always very good at exercising - and I include myself in that statement.

There is always so much to contend with in our waking hours and yes, I do think most of us are living in a "mind filled" state - and not only that, but a lot of the time we are operating in "future mode" and whilst we are doing that... all the precious present moments are slipping through our fingers.

There is so much more richness to life than what we often give focus to - and that includes time spent focusing on ourselves or for ourselves. This is something I am not very good at... being a working mom, life tends to "happen" - but I am working on it.
