SEC-S16 / W6 | "The Science of Aging👩"
Oh gosh! Am I classified under the “oldies” on Steemit?
I cannot help but wonder, as all these “Science of Aging” invites are hitting my notifications. After day 3 of the contest, I am already sitting with 8 invites.
Okay, you’ve asked for it, so here I am!
In the intro to the contest post, it is mentioned that aging normally starts after the age of 40. Do I agree with this?
Nope! I don’t.
I disagree with scientists. For me, you cannot put an age on aging as we are all different. I remember when I turned 37. My brother told me that I was now old as I no longer appeared on the roulette table. (A roulette table only has 36 numbers). All of a sudden, I mentally felt so old. It was, however, not what my body told me.
When I got to the age of 40, I was pretty much doing the same as what my two children were doing, if not more. It was only years later when I woke up one morning, got out of bed, and my legs felt stiff that the thought of aging crept into my mind. It happens to all of us, but it happens when we allow it to happen.
Jeanne Calment was a French woman who passed away in 1997 at a documented age of 122 years. It was such an extraordinary happening and a record for the longest-living human being that a millionaire, Dmitry Kaminsky, set up a reward of 1 million USD for whoever could break this record. Read more
The oldest living person to date is another woman, Maria Branyas, who turned 117 in March this year. Will she pass the record of Jeanne Calment? Only time will tell.
However, our bodies were not created to withstand extreme aging. It is not the way they were created; the food we eat, our interaction with our toxic environment, and our personal care drive our bodies to change.
Let’s take a plant. It stands in sunlight, wind, rain, and hail. Eventually, it causes structural changes in the plant. The human body is no different.
My son told me it even goes further, and it is what they, the medical professionals, call “the Hallmarks of aging." There use to be only nine factors but these days scientist refers to twelve. What interest him most of is genetic changes.
As he explained it, genetic changes take place, and poor functioning and cell death eventually take place over the years. In other words, the core of life, the regeneration of new cells, slows down with age. This causes the body to not function properly anymore, and eventually, organ failure happens.
Am I afraid of getting old? I was never afraid of getting old until recently. Okay, afraid is not the word. Sceptic is more of the word I would like to use.
My mom is turning 87, and when I look at her, I cannot help but be filled with sadness. She is no longer the woman who cooked and baked for us. She was the one we could run to for advice or just a hug. The one who wiped our tears from our faces and whispered in our ears that everything would be okay. Now, in her world, there is only one person, and that is herself and her memories.
Then I look at those old people forgotten in old age homes who depend on someone to feed them, bathe them, and change their nappies. It is not something I want.
I don’t want to be dependent on others, I don’t want to lose my memory, I don’t want to not know my children by their names anymore, and I don’t want my grandchildren to laugh at me when I say silly things.
I definitely don’t want to break that record of 122 years! What will I do with a million dollars at that age anyway?
Now over to those three nutritional items that can prevent aging.
I am afraid this is a myth, as nothing you eat can prevent aging. If that were the case, why do we have scientists working around the clock to find a solution for “reversing age?”
Eating healthy, taking your medicine and supplements, and making sure you get enough nutritional value will slow down aging. I wish my children would listen to me when I tell them to make sure that they get enough vitamin D, calcium, potassium, fiber, and polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats from their daily diet, as I did not listen to mine.
All that is left is for me to address the exercise aspect of aging.
This time the question refers to naming exercises that can make you look younger, even at an older age. My answer is YES!
As I mentioned earlier, it is on a bright morning that you realize that you are older. Older is not only what you do and how you feel, but also how you look. I believe that exercising goes so much deeper than just looking good. It helps you with your movement and your mind.
Best of all, it is the one thing that you can reverse when it comes to aging.
Three things for me that give aging away are not the lines on your face bu;
- the position of your chin
- how you get in and out of a chair, and
- your rounded shoulders or posture
A silly exercise you can do is to exercise pulling your chin back. You look a lot older when your chin is pushed forward. Not only will this exercise make you look younger, but it will also take a lot of pressure off your neck.
The biggest sign of your age is the way you get in and out of a chair. Don’t laugh! It’s true.
When you get older, you tend to use your arms to perform the movement, and in the process, you make your leg muscles lazy. It is the one exercise you must perform daily. Sitting on the edge of a chair, nose over hills, pushing forward from the hills, and standing up. Without using your arms!
Lastly, fix those rounded shoulders. This happens to all ages, especially when you sit in front of a computer all day. The best exercise for this is standing up straight and pulling exercise bands apart.
Just remember... Don’t worry, it happens to all of us!

Greetings @patjewell,
This write-up is just top notched. Aging Process is one of the inevitable or inescapable phenomenon everyone must pass through.
As you said earlier, the fear of the unknown future create the fear of aging. If people were to know their stance in their old age, there wouldn't be scared because they know what's coming. Proper diet and exercise can helps maintain the aged.
Thanks for accepting my invitation
Well I am glad that I accepted the invite as I enjoyed writing this post.
As for you visiting my post and commenting on it... Thank you! ☕
It's my honour ma'am
Who can survive aging?non. Though scientists have come up with anti-aging drugs and surgeries which has causes more harm than good, aging is something we cant avoid as long as we have have life.
Thank you for the tips on how we can keep looking young,i will be trying them regularly.
All the best my dear friend.
Ah! It's nice to see you on my blog.
Yip, aging, and death are with us. It cannot be avoided. With every second, it happens. Make peace with it and do your best to get the most out of your age. That is all that we can do.
Thanks for the visit! 🎕
I cannot help but sit here with a big smile on my face when I read about your mom. I am so glad that there is someone else who can relate to getting in and out of chairs.
I look at all these posts from Indonesia, India, etc., and I see all the women of all ages sitting on the ground, and I wonder how they get up from there.
I can only shake my head, as in a few years it will be impossible for me. As it is, I am starting to battle to cut my toe nails. Life!! We can laugh about it and enjoy it.
Thank you for making my day with your visit. (づ๑•ᴗ•๑)づꕤ
I can't tell how happy I am you didn't invite me.
If it comes to vitamine D tell your children to go outside, be in the sun, no sunblockers and as much free skin as possible.
I agree with you no matter what you eat it's more about money than doing one good. There's no well of the eternal youth, although the Celts have such a land where Niamh reigns.
I'll pass your tip for standing up to my friend who is using a wheelchair a part of the time.
P.s. Stay active, chop firewood, mow daily for 1-2 hours and you are good. A plus of losing your memory is you most likely don't know who's laughing at you. I know my grandmother was afraid because her mother and up in the madhouse but she never been in an elderly home, always lived alone and once she had cancer she stayed home too and that's where she died. Just like you I don't want to be 122 and no need to be 100 either. I believe a Dutch woman jumped with a (twin) parachute on her 100th birthday.
Haha! I've never thought of this. Thank you for making me feel better.
You've nailed it with your chopping wood and mowing. Here in South Africa, we are spoiled. We don't chop wood; we don't mow; in fact, we don't even clean our houses. We have domestic workers who do it. In the process, aging happens much quicker for us if we are not careful.
If you ask that old lady who did the parachuting at 99 what her success story is, I am dead sure she will tell you a glass of wine each day.
Cheers to the age! 🥂

Most likely (early) aging is caused by DNA. If I look around me it seems to fit till now. Meds, vax won't make it any healthier.
At times I think it's nice to have some help but I do find it uncomfortable too. It's better without, more privacy, no one touching my books, doing my laundry.
Do you bicycle, walk stairs, go shopping, hang the laundry outside, let the dogs out...once I am done I do not feel the need to visit a gym or do the other 'nonsense'.
Overhere many move less too. Groceries, sbopping online and delivered at home, children visit school alone, the dog is forgotten or those with enough money call a dogservice to let the dog out three times a day. Cleaning, housekeeping, cooking is skipped. More and more couch potatoes are created and once jobless it's even worse.

Hello friend, I very much agree with you because aging is not going to depend on age, rather it would depend on the state a person is in or how they feel.
Many times aging begins psychologically as we feel older and stop doing things that keep us active.
It is not a secret to anyone that being older has many limitations and perhaps they make us fear reaching certain ages, but if we are healthy and strong then it would be something wonderful, enjoying of life for a long time.
Success and blessings in the contest.
It seems that the saying "you are as old as the person you feel next to you" is true after all. (•ิ‿•ิ)
Let's just forget about the age and take each day as it comes.
Thank you for the visit and the comment! 🎕
Thanks for inviting me but I have no scientific knowledge about aging so I am happy as long as I am aging gracefully. I can only tell you that I don't want to feel useless in my life and the day I feel I have no role to play the aging process will start for me.
Oh yes! Just what I've expected from you... " the day I feel I have no role to play the aging process will start for me"
I can tell you that I look at you with different eyes after our chat the other day. You are a great example of how it is done for me. ☕
I'm dumbfounded with every words and pictures used in this post. You're indeed o e of a kind and giving us this opportunity hope that one day we'll be in your shoes isn't a bad one though. I am imagining when you were a kid and how you looked like. How beautiful and strong you were then compared to now. Anyways, there are still advantages of being in this level of which I think you know some of them. Wishing you best of luck in this challenge
Hello, my friend!
It is nice seeing you on my blog. Even nicer is this nice comment from you. Thank you!
As we say in my home language, Afrikaans, "Om oud te word is nie grappies nie." Translate, getting old is not for sissy's. (•ิ‿•ิ)
Thank you. As per the contest, I wanted to create my own images that would go with the post. After reading your comment, I am glad I did it.
Thank you for your good wishes! ☕
PS: I have not seen a notification about the winners of your power up contest. Just drop me a WhatsApp message when it is out, just to make sure I get it.
