Since our birth we grow almost on daily basis, our inner world has daily different changes in many organs. We noticed that more on our growth when your little baby getting taller and gaining his weight and height almost on weekly basis. That means our bones and muscles have the fastest growth. This process happen in bone where the area of growth zone that is in childhood still open and allow bones grow in length.
Also, as any process in our body there are two types of cells that are responsible for our bone quality:
osteoblasts, that are cells that responsible for creating new bone tissue, and
osteoclasts, these cells are responsible to break an old bony tissue
When we get older the process of building new bony tissue is reduced and our bones become porous and easily can break if people fall that is why we see that more in elderly that even after minor trauma there are fractures of big bones.
Common causes of osteoporosis are following:
getting older, due to reduced mobility and activity, muscles and bones are less used so it will be less blood supply and bone become fragile
women after menopause, the reason is the less female hormones produced there is then no protection from natural breakage of bones, or there is nothing to slow activities of osteoclasts
medications like steroids can leads to increase breakage of bones and less renewal of bone tissue
diet with lack of Vitamin D and calcium
smoking and alcohol
underweight and bulimia
Often in elderly, If someone has frequent falls and also frequent fractured bones even after minimal trauma should raised a suspicion of osteoporosis. Otherwise if any of above mentioned causes present and also evidence of fractures bones then the person should undergo either simple Xray that will show the quality of that fractured bone. Alternatively, bone density scan can be performed for further assessment.
In UK one of the commonest treatment of osteoporosis is Alendronic acid that is taken once a week, but also patients have Vitamin D and Calcium rich products and in female estrogen hormone therapy. Also there is an injection of Denosumab, or it is called osteoporosis injection that is given every 6 months.
As prevention people should do regular fitness exercises, stop smoking and alcohol consume, food rich in Calcium, fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
Hope it gave you an idea about this condition and let's do everything to strengthen our bones.
*I would like to invite @pea07, @fajrulakmal99 @whizzbro4eva to this contest

It is common disease for elderly people and often people find first when they have factures. Luckily there is a lot of information about osteoporosis nowadays and thank internet we can learn a lot and do something against that.
