Showcasing fence design aesthetics to land a job.

Presenting a Portfolio For a Job

Just of recent, on the blank side of the fence facing East at the Tropicana hotel in Uyo, a conspicuous capped pillar appeared. The aesthetic design was presented as a sample in a bid to land a job at the construction site.

A Revit rendering of the design was made available to us, alongside its elevations, projections and cross-section showing a rectangle measuring 6" x 4" rising up above the fence 24" and falling back to the ground, forming a U-shaped profile.

We decided to mould the pillars on the ground, then mount them to the walls. This will ensure a better finish.

Mould, Casting and Markings

We used the provided information to forge a mould which guided our casting, a back-breaking process that involved the use of cement, water and some hardening reagents to build smooth ridges that will become the aesthetic pillars.

While the pillars were being moulded, the sample location had to be marked. We used a permanent marker, tape and a long plumb to have the wall marked out accurately.

The aesthetic pillars needed reinforcements, so an internal metal framework was designed out of a 16mm rod. The structure was drilled into the wall and held by binding wires.
Some segments of the wall's coping were removed with an angle grinder. The options were to carve a notch on the pillar or to carve out some space on the coping. To give the pillars all the strength they need, we agreed to cut out the space on the coping.

This picture was captured immediately after I cut the coping and installed the pillar's metal skeleton.

Cut, plumb and installation

The piller caked and are now ready for installation. This process needs an angle grinder and careful markings. We had to measure and cut the pillars to ease movement and to obtain a mitre joint at the top.

The installation was guided by a long plum and the lines we drew earlier.

Cement mortar was used to glue it to the fence and bond it with the metal skeleton.

Adding a finishing touch

All corners and angles had to be close to perfect. The sides needed a good finish, and the joinings have to blend well. This requires time and skill.
After working for some hours, the U-shaped profile was conspicuous on the wall.

Looking like an Obelisk that shoots into the sky, this sample commands the attention of those passing.

Looking at this sample, do you think we will land this job? Will you consider this design for your fence or recommend it for someone?

Conclusion

A sample speaks louder than words, because showing is better than describing with words. So it is safe to say a sample is worth a thousand words.
