SLC | S21W6 | Costs for entrepreneurs - Cost structure.
Assalam O Alaikum.
Hello my steemit friends i am excited to share my thoughts about entrepreneurship and cost structures in this contest. As a student of cardiology i always admire the way detailed planning and strategy help achieve big goals. In this post i will explain what a cost structure is why it is important and how it applies to entrepreneurship. I will also prepare an example cost structure for a cake-making business. Lets dive in.
What is a cost structure and its importance for entrepreneurship?
A cost structures refers to the various expenses a business has to incur to produced its goods or services it is the backbone of any business plans because it shows how much money is needed to operates and make a profit. Entrepreneurs need to understands their cost structures to manage their resources effectively set competitives prices and ensure their business stays profitable. For example a small bakery needs to know its fixed costs such as rents and electricity and variables costs like ingredients and packaging. By understanding this the bakery owner can calculate the right selling price for cakes and avoid losses. A well-defined cost structure also helps entrepreneurs make better decisions. For instance they can identify areas where costs can be reduced or optimize production to improve profits. Without this knowledge running a business can be risky and unorganized.
Provide examples of businesses that use the cost structure methods explained; explain your answers?
Subscription-Based Services.
Many businesses like Netflix use a cost structure focused on fixed costs. Netflix invests heavily in content creation and technology infrastructure. These fixed costs allow it to provide unlimited streaming to its subscribers at a consistent monthly fee. The high number of users helps spread these costs and maximize profits.
Manufacturing Companies.
A car manufacturer like Toyota has a mix of fixed and variable costs. Fixed costs include factory rent and machinery while variable costs include materials like steel and tires. By producing cars at scale Toyota lowers the cost per unit making their vehicles affordable while maintaining quality.
Freelance Services.
Freelancers like graphic designers often have low fixed costs (like software subscriptions) and variable costs depending on client requirements. By managing these costs effectively they ensure competitive pricing and good profits.
These examples show that understanding cost structures helps businesses of all types plan better and succeed in their industries.
What are the elements of a cost structure? Provide examples?
A cost structure includes two main elements:
Fixed Costs.
Fixed costs are expenses that remains constant no matters how much you produce. Examples include:
Rent for a shop or office.
Salaries of permanent staff.
Equipment maintenance costs.
Variable Costs
Variable costs change depending on production levels. Examples include:
Raw materials.
Shipping and delivery costs.
Utility bills that vary with usage.
For instance in a cake business fixed costs might include rent for the kitchen space while variable costs include flour sugar and eggs. Understanding these costs helps set the right prices and manage expenses efficiently.
Prepare the cost structure of a business dedicated to making cakes. It has a production of 5 cakes per day and expects to obtain a total profit margin of 25%?
Let’s create a cost structure for a small business that makes 5 cakes per day. The business aims for a profit margin of 25%.
Fixed Costs.
Rent: $500/month (assume 30 days in a month so daily cost = $500 ÷ 30 = $16.67).
Equipments Maintenances: $300/month (daily costs = $300 ÷ 30 = $10).
Utilities (electricitys water): $150/months (dailys cost = $150 ÷ 30 = $5).
Totals Fixed Costs per Days: $16.67 + $10 + $5 = $31.67
Variable Costs (Per Cake).
Ingredients (flour sugar eggs etc.): $10 per cake.
Packaging: $2 per cake.
Labor (hourly wage for cake preparation): $5 per cake.
Total Variable Cost Per Cake: $10 + $2 + $5 = $17
Daily Variable Costs (5 Cakes):
$17 × 5 = $85
Total Dailys Costs:
Fixed Cost + Variables Costs = $31.67 + $85 = $116.67
Selling Price and Profit Calculation.
The business aims for a 25% profits margin.
Total Daily Costs=$116.67.
Profits Targeted=$116.67 × 0.25= $29.17.
Totals Revenued Neededs=$116.67+ $29.17 = $145.84.
To cover costs and achieve the profit margin the selling price per cake should be:
Total Revenue Needed ÷ Number of Cakes = $145.84 ÷ 5 = $29.17 per cake.
Understanding the cost structures is essentials for any entrepreneurs it helps in planings settings the rights prices and ensuring a healthy profit margins. Businesses like Netflix Toyota and freelancers rely on cost structures to thrive. By knowing the fixed and variable costs entrepreneurs can run their businesses effectively and achieve success.

Yes, that's right, I agree that all businesses must know the capital spent to produce goods or the amount of costs spent in making one portion of cake. Only then can the price be set according to the profit to be taken, for example, plus 20% of the total capital to produce the goods, the difference of 20% is the profit. It is so important to know the cost structure so that it is easy to set the selling price including net profit. Thank you very much for writing quality content by sharing it with us on the Steemit platform. This article gets 100% votes from waterjoe ..:)
