Friends, our daily lives entail adhering to certain rules, fulfilling specific responsibilities, and performing various tasks. However, this particular assignment of mine is an entirely new experience—one that is both novel and deeply engaging. Moreover, it is a commitment limited to a mere 15 days. It can be described as a specific duty undertaken as part of a broader set of responsibilities; since I am currently residing in a hostel, I am required to abide by certain regulations—rules that apply equally to everyone, though many often attempt to sidestep them.

In any case, all operational duties here—ranging from managing meals and handling all the grocery shopping to overseeing newspaper subscriptions and managing the keys and locks—are entrusted to a group of four individuals for a 15-day rotation. In this manner, these four individuals collectively shoulder all the responsibilities for a 15-day cycle. The entire process is supervised and managed by members of the Mess Committee and the Audit Committee—individuals who, just like us, are students themselves.

In any case, since I am one of the four members assigned to manage the mess for the upcoming fifteen days, I am currently fulfilling my duties regarding its administration. Consequently, I have to handle a variety of tasks—one of which is counting the newspapers, a duty I have already shared with you. Another part of my responsibilities involves distributing keys. In this context, completing all tasks in a timely manner is of paramount importance.

Taking charge of the keys was an incredibly difficult task for me. This was because, out of a 15-day period, the responsibility for the keys fell upon me for four days. Having the keys in hand meant constantly having to rush off—at any given moment—to unlock the main gate or the storeroom. Since the rooms of my colleagues were located on the ground floor, whereas my own room was situated on the third floor (or second floor, by Western reckoning), repeatedly climbing up and down the stairs proved to be a grueling ordeal for me. Consequently, over the course of those four days, the constant shuttling between the upper and lower floors left both my legs aching and swollen. Yet, in the face of duty, such personal physical discomfort is generally regarded by others as a matter of little significance.

In any case, after receiving the keys, my responsibility was to open the hostel's main gate and the two gates leading to the rooftop at 5:30 AM. Subsequently, if anyone needed to store personal items in the refrigerator, I had to unlock the door to the storeroom. In the afternoon, I had to unlock three doors for cooking purposes and lock them again once the cooking was finished; furthermore, the two storerooms frequently required unlocking and locking whenever someone needed to retrieve specific items. Additionally, after the cooking was completed in the afternoon, the key and lock for one of the rooftop gates were handed over to the dining room staff around 6:00 PM or 6:40 PM.

As soon as 8:30 PM strikes, I have to go and close the hostel's main gate once again. Then, when the staff members arrive at 9:00 PM to serve dinner, I have to reopen the main gate. After they have finished serving the food, I am required to lock the gate once more at 9:30 PM. Subsequently—whether someone from another hostel comes to visit ours, someone arrives late and holds a gate pass for some reason, or visitors arrive from outside—I am constantly obliged to unlock or lock the gate at any given moment. This proved to be an immense source of stress for me, as it required me to descend all the way from the third floor repeatedly.

Subsequently, the gates on both sides of the rooftop must be locked at 11:30 PM. Since the key to the dining room is no longer required at night, it is handed over to one of the rooftop gates. As there are three-story buildings situated on both the front and back sides, this rooftop serves as a passageway connecting the two structures. Occasionally—depending on requirements—the rooftop gates must be locked at 12:00 AM instead of 11:30 PM; all such actions are carried out strictly in accordance with the directives of the mess committee. So, that concludes my account of the locks and keys over these past four days.

I hope you will like my post very much. I will be back again with a new post later. Until then, everyone stay well. May God keep everyone healthy.

Best regards:
