Dear Steemians,
I am Jyoti from India, I wish you a happy Pongal!!

Last Friday, January 15th, the Pongal festival was celebrated grandly in Tamil Nadu and by Tamils all over the world. We also celebrated the Pongal festival here at our home.

The Pongal festival is a festival that celebrates the Sun God. The sun is the mother of this world. This is because the Earth and other planets originated from the sun. Therefore, the sun is the mother of the Earth. Just as we celebrate the mother who gave us life, we celebrate the sun, the mother who gave life to all.

The first day of the Tamil month of Thai is the day to celebrate the sun, which is the source of sustenance for the growth of all living beings. Of the 12 Tamil months, there are two months whose beginnings are celebrated with special significance. One is the month of Chithirai, which is celebrated as the Tamil New Year. The other is the month of Thai. Pongal is celebrated as a Tamil festival all over the world by Tamil people.

Now I am going to write about how we celebrated at home.

On the day of the Pongal festival, people bring the harvested paddy stalks home. They offer these stalks to God and affix them to the top of the door frame with cow dung. They then apply turmeric, sandalwood paste, and vermilion to them and perform a puja (worship). Similarly, they also tie the stalks into a beautiful ring and hang it in the house like a hanging basket. Even today, in old houses in villages, you can see these decorative rings made of paddy stalks on top of the wooden pillars. Birds and sparrows come and feed on the grains in these rings. When the sounds of these birds are heard in the houses, it is believed to bring auspiciousness and prosperity.

However, since we are not currently engaged in farming and are celebrating this at home, we were unable to perform such rituals. Nevertheless, we drew a beautiful rangoli at the entrance. Then, everyone wore new clothes, and we made pongal in a pot in the kitchen at home. My daughter made the pongal. Pongal is a sweet dish made by cooking rice and adding jaggery, ghee, raisins, cashews, and cardamom to it. We made it at home. Then, we offered it to God, decorated God's picture, placed sugarcane, coconut, bananas, betel leaves, areca nuts, and lemons nearby, performed a camphor aarti, worshipped God, and then distributed the pongal as prasad to everyone and ate it.

After that, we all took selfies. My brother's daughter also joined us to celebrate our Pongal festival, and we all took selfie photos together with her. We are proud to share them with you.

💚THANK YOU 💚
