It is another day and we hear another call for help, I am glad that there are still communities who look after their users and highlighting this kind of cases.

To give a short summary I wanted to tell that there is a user in Scouts community @ahumadaliliana29 with painful lump over the back of her hand, it is a common condition but it is painful so that difficult to do anything with hand especially if it is the main hand of a person.

Just because I know a little bit about ganglion I wanted to give you a short description.

 

What is Ganglion

 

While we had our surgical training we went through all the surgical fields including orthopaedic and hand surgery, because this everything bones and joints.

I remember seeing first time a hand with ganglion, it is like a little ball over wrist, round "marble" shape, it was not painful in their cases that I saw but it was interfering in daily work.

What is ganglion and how it happens? Often it is result of trauma or inflammation of join. The content of ganglion is the same fluid that is in joint, look like clear mucous fluid, that is normally lubricates the joint in order to keep the movement smooth.

Treatment of ganglion

 

As everything there are three options what to do:

• nothing, topical ointments for pain, bandages and not to overdo with work

• needle-aspiration, that can help, because the content will be aspirated. Few of my colleagues told that they had such ganglion aspirated but they all come back after short time

• surgical removal, can be done under local anaesthetic, nerve block in arm and also general anaesthesia. When removing such ganglion people should not forget that the stalk of it need to be removed, because that is a feeding part of ganglion.

From all three surgical treatment is the most efficient and has less recurrence but also is more expensive than just needle-aspiration.
