While EMI did indeed stand for "Electrical and Musical Industries" when it was founded in 1931, the company later dropped the "Electrical" part in 1972. So, for the latter part of its existence, EMI simply stood for "Musical Industries."

Here's a timeline of the company's name evolution:

  • 1931: Founded as "Electrical and Musical Industries"
  • 1972: Shortened to "Musical Industries"
  • 2012: Acquired by Universal Music Group and ceased to exist as a separate entity

The EMI Awards, which were established in 1973, continued to use the full name "EMI Awards" until 1989. After that, they were simply called "The BRIT Awards."

So, while the "Electrical and Musical Instruments" origin story is interesting, it's important to remember that it wasn't the official name of EMI for its entire history.
