Assalamu Alaikum friends. Wishing everyone good health. Hope you all are well. By God's grace I am fine too. Today I am here to participate in a wonderful learning competition organized by our teacher @ashkhan. The topic of this contest is Steemit Learning Challenge-S21W6; Disc Herniation". So this is a very important competition where we can learn some important things. Below are some questions that I will answer correctly. So let's get started.

What's disc herniation? Write in your own words after getting knowledge from the lesson post.

Disc herniation is a common spinal disc problem in which one or more discs are displaced or damaged. It is also known as slipped disc or ruptured disc. The discs present in our spine connect the surface bones and act as a buffer during movement.

How many parts does a herniated disc have?
  • 01 : Annulus fibrosis - hardened outer layer.

  • 02 : Nucleus pulposus - Soft, jelly-like interior.

During a disc herniation, the outer layer of the disc (annulus fibrosis) tears and the nucleus pulposus protrudes. This displacement puts pressure on nearby nerves and other structures, producing a variety of symptoms.

What causes disc herniation1000007047.jpgSource
Age-related degenerationThe elasticity of the disc decreases with age.
Improper Posture and Excessive StressImproper posture or excessive stress while lifting heavy objects.
Excess weightExcess weight puts extra stress on the spine.
Hereditary CausesIt can also be due to genetic factors
AndSitting for long periods of time or moving less.
Symptoms of disc herniation1000007048.jpgSource
  • Back pain (especially in the lumbar region).
Sciatica PainPain radiates down the back of the leg.
Neck painIf cervical disc is involved.
Tingling sensation and numbnessdue to nerve compression.
Muscle weaknessMuscles in the arms, legs or neck may become weak.
How would you diagnose a disc herniation? Any clinical investigation or assessment tests?

Disc herniation is diagnosed based on the patient's symptoms, physical examination, and certain imaging tests. I have discussed this process below in simple language.

01 : Symptom monitoring :- To know the type and location of pain from the patient. Common symptoms of disc herniation are,

Symptom1000007049.pngSource
  • Back pain or sciatica pain.

  • Tingling or numbness in the legs due to nerve compression.

  • Pain in the neck or arm, if the cervical region is involved.

  • muscle weakness

02 : Physical examination :- Different parts of the patient's body are examined to understand the pain or weakness.

Straight Leg Raise TestDoes raising the leg increase the pain?
Neurological examinationCheck for any abnormal reflexes or numbness due to nerve compression.

03 : Imaging tests will be done :- If physical examination cannot be confirmed then the following tests can be done.

Imaging tests like MRI1000007050.pngSource
X-rayDetects bone changes and disc compression.
MRIThis shows the condition of the disc and nerves in detail.
CT ScanTo look for disc abnormalities.

04 : Know the history of the patient :- The previous medical history of the patient and whether there is any such problem in the family will be known.

By combining all these observations and tests, the doctor diagnoses the exact cause and level of disc herniation.

Try to practice at least 3 exercises that you have learned from the lesson. Share images, gifs or videos while practicing preferably gifs or videos.

01 - Hip Bridging Exercise

1000007096.gif

  • Hip bridging exercises are mainly effective for strengthening the lower back, glutes (back muscles), and core muscles. It is especially helpful in reducing disc herniation or back pain. It strengthens the waist muscles. It improves back stability. It helps in maintaining proper body posture. It improves blood circulation and makes muscles flexible.

02 - William Flexion ( knee to chest stretch)

1000007098.gif

  • The William Flexion (Knee to Chest Stretch) exercise is effective in reducing lower back pain and increasing muscle flexibility. It reduces pain by relaxing the muscles. It improves waist mobility. It reduces inflammation by stretching the waist muscles. This exercise is especially useful for disc herniation or loosening tight back muscles.

03 - Sciatic Nerve Glides

1000007100.gif

  • Sciatic Nerve Glides exercises are particularly effective in relieving sciatic nerve pain and improving nerve function. Relieves pain by reducing pressure around the sciatic nerve. Restores normal mobility of nerves. It relieves nerve compression. Doing this exercise regularly can keep sciatica pain and associated symptoms under control.
Share your review after performing these exercises either on yourself, healthy individual or patient.

I share my experience after performing the above three exercises (Hip Bridging, William Flexion, and Sciatic Nerve Glides). I personally feel very comfortable after doing this exercise myself.

Hip Bridging Exercise1000007066.jpg

Experience: Felt a bit tight on the waist at first but felt comfortable after doing it a few times. Effective in maintaining waist strength and balance.

BenefitsThis exercise helps strengthen the back muscles and provides a sense of waist stabilization. But be careful if you have chronic pain.
William Flexion1000007072.jpg

Experience: The exercise is easy and comfortable. It helps in stretching the waist muscles. The pain has subsided even though there is a slight tension in the waist.

BenefitsIt is very effective in reducing back pain and helps in increasing the flexibility of the spine.
Sciatic Nerve Glides1000007086.jpg

Experience: This exercise is very helpful in reducing nervous tension. Feel comfortable while doing it slowly. Nerve mobility is improved.

BenefitsThis exercise is effective in reducing sciatic nerve pain and mild relaxation is felt in the legs after the exercise.

All three exercises help with back pain, nerve compression, and muscle strength. Doing it regularly will give you better results. However, if the pain increases, a physiotherapist should be consulted.

So it's a great exercise competition. In this competition we practiced three exercises. So I am Inviting my lovely Steemian friends @stef1, @irawandedy, @kouba01, @selina1, @adeljose to Participate in this Competition.

Thank You So Much For Reading My Blog.

Hi friends, you really have explained about herniated discs in great depth. In addition, you have also practiced 3 exercises well as in the given material. Best of luck to you friend.

Thank you so much for spending your precious time on this post and giving such a wonderful comment. I wish you success. God bless you.

Amen, thank you for your prayer.

Thank you for understanding the lesson and sharing your assignment; I hope that you will enjoy this week's lesson and try to implement it in your life if you see any such case.

Observations

Task 1 (2.7/3)
You have shared a good knowledge about disc herniation, its symptoms, and and causes, but you didn't its types. You add about the pain the 2 regions but it would be better if you add the types specifficaly. A bit more depth require to complete the answer. I appreciate your effort.

Task 2 (2.7/3)
In the second question, you tell us about how you have to assess a patient by doing physical examination and history taking, performing investigations and special tests. It would be better if you add one special test of each region to assess the disc herniation. Great.

Task 3 (4/4)
You try the hip bridging, William Flexion and sciatic nerve glides. You did the hip bridging, William Flexion and sciatic nerve glides correctly. Always remember to apply heat pack before performing exercises to relax the muscles and reduce stiffness. I appreciate your efforts.

Overall you made a great attempt to answer all the questions. I appreciate your efforts. But next time try to avoid the above written suggestions. Keep learning and try to implement your knowledge to the people suffering from disc herniation or any type of back pain. Thank you.
